High Globulin levels
For the past year, I have been treated for iron defient anemia and received my 2nd iron infusion last week. Before the infusion my test results indicated a high globulin level of 4.1 and a normal albumin level of 3.8. Although the total protein was at the high end of normal range should I be concerned with the high globulin level and low a/g ratio (.92%)?
A low A/G ratio may be due to overproduction of globulin or underproduction of albumin.
The globulin level may be elevated in:
Chronic infections (parasites, some viral and bacterial infections)
Liver disease (biliary cirrhosis, obstructive jaundice)
Carcinoid syndrome
Rheumatoid arthritis
Ulcerative colitis
Multiple myelomas
Leukemias
Waldenstrom's macroglobulinemia
Autoimmune diseases (Systemic lupus, collagen diseases)
Kidney dysfunction (Nephrosis)
The globulin level may be elevated in:
