coumaden and exercise

How does exercise effect Coumadin?  My 87 year old personal training client has been needing to up his Coumadin since he has been training with me.

Yes, diet and exercise can affect the levels of Coumadin in blood and thus affect the INR. If patient keeps increasing the Coumadin dose based on INR, it can be dangerous as this can cause internal bleeds. Hence, all exercise programs, especially in elderly on Coumadin should be under the guidance of a cardiologist. Please discuss this with your client’s cardiologist and chalk out a program that will suit him. Take care!
