What is triggering my Hypnic Jerks (Sleeping Twitches)?

Okay, this may be a shot in the dark because I'm new to asking medical questions on online medical forums...so here it goes and hopefully someone out there can help:

I am 18 years old and technically perfectly healthy. However, this past month has not been "perfect" for me as three weeks ago I encountered the worse week of my life. It all started with going to bed and hopeful for a good night sleep--like always--but instead I had 4-6 sleep jerks in which held back my sleeping time for 2-3 hours before I could get some sleep. Few days later I still had sleeping jerks, but in addition with major fatigue, loss of appetite, anxiety, tired eyes, loss of motivation.

I went to my doctor about it, and he had asked me if I had been taking energy supplements, and I told the doctor I was taking whey protein (shakes) because I wanted to go to a fitness center and improve my strength. My doctor told me to lay off on the whey protein, and I did, and that I was feeling the long term negative side effects from it. A few days later, I began to feel like myself again (healthy basically), and I thought everything was back to normal. It still is, by the way, but not much for one symptoms that has not gone away yet...sleeping twitch/hypnic jerks before falling asleep.

I've been trying to dissect what is causing me to have these jerks before falling asleep, and have read many articles saying that it's normal, etc etc.

Physical examination: my doctor told me my blood pressure and heart rate were normal, EXCEPT sometimes I feel my heart twitches too plus extra heartbeat. My doctor said it's all psychological and that I am "feeling" it, but it's not happening.

Anyways, hopefully this gets answered.

Thanks! :)
