Below is a link to a an excellent thread about preparing for mastectomy, in that case bilateral, but you might still pick up a few ideas from it that would also be helpful in your case:

I'm sure the time until your surgery will hang heavy, but try to have some fun while you wait, okay?

I'm sure your pink hair is terrific! You are definitely a braver woman than I am! I'll wear pink or my pink ribbon pins, but wouldn't consider dyeing my hair pink. (Of course, I'm 64 and really would look ridiculous with pink hair!)What a great way to raise awareness for breast cancer---you go, girl!
Wishing you all the best,
nc
Thannkyou all, your words are keeping me positive!
Hi again,
Hope your surgery and recovery go smoothly, and that the nodes are negative.
You are in my thoughts--and now with pink hair! :-)
bb
Trying to stay positive dyed my hair pink in aid of breast cancer october! looks good!
I'm sure the inconclusive results were disappointing but good luck with your surgery and I'm hoping the nodes end up being negative then. Try to keep your positive attitude and fighting spirit as you go through all this. I know it's not a good "reality" right now, but it's not impossible to overcome it and end up in really good place-healthy and happy again!
Hugs to you,
nc
just got mu bubble test back, inconclusive!!!!! but what the surgeon said was that in surgery they will test the nodes again and take out while im asleep, surgery will be between 2-3 weeks having a mastomy on left breast leaving the implant and then waiting on the test of the cancer to see what further treatment chemo radaition etc. suddnley its becoming real
Yes at the moment I feel like my life is on hold from hospital appoinment to hospital appoinment!
Sorry the test was difficult for you. :-(
And now more waiting...
Hope it's good news on Monday!
bb
Really not pleasent test, very bruised and sore, have test results on monday.
i HAVE MY BUBBLE TEST 2MOZ!
Hi, again,
It sounds like you said all the right things to your sons and that they'll be strong and able to accept what comes, just like their Mom. I'm sure it's a great relief to you now that they know and I'm sure they'll be supportive every step of the way.
I'm hoping your nodes will be clear and the mastectomy will be all that's required as far as the initial surgery. I know some of the photos of reconstruction can look scarey, but they really can do some amazing things these days with plastic surgery. I hope yours goes well, too, and that you'll be pleased with the results. If they do the lift, at least they'll be up where they belong before gravity took over-LOL :o) You just hang in there through this tough time and I have a feeling you'll do just fine.
Hugs,
nc
Thankyou ,yes, ive just looked soooo scarey!!!! on talking to my surgeon today and with the cancer lump being the size and the placement of the lump right by my nipple, depending on the results of the bubble test, that is being done on Wednesday, if the nodes are cancer clear they will just take the sential node, and because i have breast implants if I dont need to have radiotherapy we have decided between us that the best surgery for myself would be to have a masctomy on my left breast, taking away all the breast tissue and nipple, leaving in the implant and the skin and rebuilding, then later having my nipple replaced, depending on the overall size after surgery on my left breast they may well put a bigger implant in if the skin shrinks and my left breast ends up smaller than my right, they have also said that they could do a breast lift ! so thats a bit of a bonus if there can be one to all of this. This means more than one surgery and some months in between the ops, Its going to be a gradual process and most prob will have to have chemo inbetween, but im feeling very positive and ready to fight, thankyou again for all your support.
p.s. I just sent you a private message with a link to the photo album of one breast restoration center.

Glad the talk with your sons went as expected.
In regard to scars, plastic surgeons often have computer pictures of their work , showing how breasts may look after reconstruction. If you have just a lumpectomy, scarring is generally minimal.
If your plastic surgeon doesn't have his/her computer photos to show you, there are many Web sites that show reconstruction outcomes.

Point of clarification, in regard to a previous post: It would not be appropriate to try to make a surgeon commit to "taking only one node" during a Sentinel Node Biopsy, because the procedure actually involves pinpointing the FIRST FEW lymph nodes into which a tumor drains (those NODES most likely to contain cancer cells).
Here is a brief description of the procedure: "Sentinel node biopsy is a surgical diagnostic procedure done to remove a small sample of lymph nodes so they can be tested for metastasis. Those sentinel nodes are examined to determine if cancer cells have metastasized (spread) beyond the original tumor.
A radiologist or nuclear medicine specialist injects a weak radioactive dye or a blue dye or a combination of both, into the tumor site. Imaging studies are done to show which clump of lymph nodes is receiving the dyes, and that indicates where the sentinel lymph node will be found. The surgeon looks for the lymph nodes that have been stained. Only one to three nodes are usually removed, unless many more are stained."
seeing the breast surgon today, hopefully she will be able to guide me in the right direction as to which surgery, are the scars really bad, my biggest fear is looking like a freak, will i ever be the same again? i will let you know how it goes with the surgon later, as for telling my boys it went really as expected, they were upset and had lots of questions, I have told them that i will be honest with them each step of the way and not hide anything from them, I think like me once they get over the shock they will be able to deal with the situation.
If the Dr does the Sentinal node procedure you have ALREADY been told by the biopsy that the axillary area is cx free, make him/her commit to only taking 1node that you do NOT have to deal with inflammation from operating where it was NOT necessary. Needless to say, choice is yours, I deeply regret no one telling me of unnecessary procedure and I consented and am left with consequences!
