Biopsy results

Recently underwent stereotactic breast biopsy.  Results came back Focal atypical lobular hyperplasia. Referred to general surgeon who was not familiar with lobular hyperplasia.  What are the treatment options for this lesion?

Hello and welcome to the forum. Glad you found us.  So, you are smart to be taking care of your health, getting mammograms, following up and asking questions.  What prompted the breast biopsy?  An abnormal mammogram?  Do you recall your birad score?  Lobular hyperplasia is an overgrowth of cell lining the milk glands (lobules).  This can be typical or atypical and you are indicating they are stating yours are atypical.  Atypical hyperplasia  increases the risk of breast cancer, unfortunately. The risk of breast cancer is about 4 to 5 times higher than that of a woman with no breast abnormalities. A lot of times, they watch and see with this but they will also remove the tissue surrounding it to make sure there is nothing more serious going on such as cancer.  This is presumably why you are being referred to a general surgeon. They will remove tissue around the hyperplasia (ovegrowth of cells). ** Most women with Focal atypical lobular hyperplasia will not develop breast cancer but they obviously want to assess risk and be proactive with early detection.  talk to your health care provider about this.  https://www.cancer.org/cancer/breast-cancer/non-cancerous-breast-conditions/hyperplasia-of-the-breast-ductal-or-lobular.html

Thank you for your response.  Breast biopsy was performed after abnormal mammogram for calcifications.  Birad score 4.  Already had saw surgeon who wanted to do needle directed incisional biopsy. He was unsure of how much tissue would be removed and needed to "read up" on lobular hyperplasia.

Hello again.  Have you had it performed as of yet?  Many times, calcifications and higher BiRad scores are still a benign finding.  Please let us know the update.
