Could my 2 "masses" be cancerous?

Last year at the same time my mom was diagnosed with cancer #3 (melanoma was the 1st cancer a little over 42 years ago (they told my dad she had 3-5 years to live), Renal cell carcinoma the 2nd cancer Thanksgiving 2010 and had her kidney removed in Jan 2011, a recurrence of renal cell 3rd dx of cancer with lesions in the area where the kidney was removed and on her liver that were found and burned off in early 2012 with radioablasion, stage IV inoperable pancreatic cancer 4th dx Dec 2012 less than a month after her PET scan said she was cancer free!) I was told I needed a repeat mammogram and ultrasound. I was told fibrous cysts and what a relief! I didn't tell my parents until I had the all clear, they had enough going on. So now a year later the day after my mammogram I get "the phone call"...We need you in to do a repeat mammogram. After the mammogram I was sent to ultrasound a few minutes later. no biggie..did this a year ago...the US tech looked for forever and then says she's going to get the doc to look...uh, oh....NOT the same as last year! He looks takes picks whispers back and forth with the tech and then says we need to do a biopsy because with the cancer history in my family he doesn't want to take any chances..(btw..my sister has been dx with 4 different cancers one of which was breast cancer...) He said he would do the fna first and that he would just drain them all the way if they were fluid filled cysts...8 chunks of breast tissue for biopsy later and now I play the waiting game....Could these be cancerous?

That is very odd that you weren't given more information about the results of the biopsy although very often no too much information is given over the phone. Perhaps there may have been some atypical cells present, although not cancer, are findings that usually are removed as a preventative measure. Fibroadenomas are often rather fast growing and are removed for that reason even though they are not malignant. Anxious to hear about this mystery so please post when you get the info, OK ?  Take care ...

Ok. I was called the day after my first mammogram requesting me to come in the next day to have another mammo and u/s, that resulted in an u/s guided core biopsy. Through all of this they call Monday and said b9...however Tuesday my doctor calls to schedule me for a lumpectomy! I will actually see him tomorrow so will ask why if my results were b9 I'm having to have this done. Neither nurse gave me any info as to what was found other than the first call saying b9. I will be asking for answers tomorrow!

I'm sure the Dr. is telling you all he knows at this point .... only the biopsy can tell for sure what the masses represent; the one and only way. Usually it takes a compression view to straighten out those folds of tissue that sometimes show up on Mammogram. I believe with only a year between the two Mammograms it would be fairly unusual for two masses to represent cancer but I suppose stranger things have happened. I'm thinking more likely to be Fibroadenomas but that's just a guess based on the information you have provided. We'll be waiting for the "word" on Monday as well so please let us know.  Take care ....

I forgot to add when they called me the day after my mammogram to schedule my repeat mammogram she said there was density in the breast and that they were concerned that they had gotten a "fold" in the skin when the mammogram was done the first time. She also said there were 2 areas close to the chest wall that they needed better pictures of. The density in the breast was not a fold in the skin as it showed up on mammogram #2 and on the ultrasound. He said I had quite a few fibrous cysts in both breasts (they started appearing last year hence the first repeat mammogram where they scared me to death) Now there are 2 what they are calling masses. they are a little over 1cm each. My breasts have always been very sensitive and the US guided core biopsy they did where he took 4 specimens from each mass...Needless to say I still hurt really bad. Said I should have results on Monday but I am a little concerned because I think he's not telling me everything. All I know is there were masses they biopsied and I'm waiting.

With the comments, etc. there is nothing that says "cancer" If these findings are going to be drained then they must be suspected cysts and cysts are NOT cancer. I can see where you might well be quite concerned about this The story about your Mother's experience sounds like a Miracle too me. She is truly VERY fortunate. It would be interesting to read what the Radiologist's final report on your most recent film states. There would be an opinion in writing as to what the findings represent. Keep us posted when the wait is over and you receive your biopsy/aspiration results.  Regards .....
