DIEP Reconstruction and Smoking

When first diagnosed with breast cancer 8 weeks ago, I started smoking again after two years.  Approximately 3-5 cigarettes a day.  I've now stopped again completely and I want to have DIEP reconstruction immediately after my bilateral mastectomy in 3 weeks.  Will this be safe enough?

Hi,
I don't think that smoking only 3 to 5 cigarettes a day for a short period of time will affect your surgery, especially now that you have succeeded in stopping the habit completely.
It is recommended for at least two weeks before and after your procedure that you stop smoking because you could be vulnerable to numerous complications, such as infection, poor and/or delayed wound healing, longer bruising period etc...
Wishing you success and prompt recovery on your surgery and reconstruction.
Good luck...
