Doctor will not biopsy breast lump - scared!

Hello all,

I am a 24 year old woman and do not smoke, drink or have family members with cancer. In October, my OBGYN found a lump in my right breast and ordered that I have an ultrasound. I had two ultrasounds and was told that due to my age, breast size (large, dense breasts), that the lump was a fibroid adenoma. The doctor said that she did not suspect that it was cancer. I asked about having a biopsy because I was and continue to experience pain at the site of the lump. She said if I were 30, she would have a biopsy done, but because of my age and dense breast tissue, she was not concerned. I am supposed to come back in June for another biopsy. However, the lump was found in October and I feel anxious about not knowing for sure if I have cancer. The breast with the lump is also larger than the other breast. Both of my breasts have an odd skin appearance now as well. They are not lumpy, but have red splotchiness scattered across the surface. Should I demand that I have a biopsy now? What if my insurance doesn't cover it because of my age? Please help!

I would get a second opinion also. I was just diagnosed with Stage 1 IDC and my lump popped up over night it seemed. There wasn't any pain associated with my lump, but I've always had dense "lumpy" sore boobs. My surgeon so much as even told me he was 99% sure it wasnt' cancer while we were in the operating room. He even went as far as to show me the tumor and cut it open in front of me. So you can imagine my surprise to get the call and be told it was cancer. I don't smoke, don't drink, am the first in the family to have breast cancer, eat heatlhy and exercise, so please..........get a second opinion.

One additional note .. there is rarely any pain associated with breast caancer. The diagnosis is most likely correct but a second opinion is never out of the question.

Thanks so much for your responses, I really appreciate it. Day22, I hope your biopsy goes well, I'm sure you are just fine. I will probably wait it out if the pain doesn't bug me too much until then. Well, I feel a little better, so thanks! :)

I am in the same situation as you. I am 22 yrs old and i had a lump in my breast ever since i was 16. Finally went to the doctor to check it out and they sent me to get a ultrasound. The ultrasound showed three lumps in my breast i did'nt even know i had. They said that it was fibroidenoma and that i could just leave them alone. But now i have another lump in my other breast breast they gave me a mam and a ult and they said that it was the same thing a fibroidenoma. But I still feel anxious and scared so i asked to get a biopsy done on all the lumps. I go in 2 weeks. If you dont feel comfortable ask for a biopsy Im sure it wont make a diffference with your insurance. If the ultrasound says it looks like a fibroadenoma then it propably is.
Good Luck

If it looks like a fibroadenoma on the ultrasound then it most likely is.  Breast cancer is rare at your age, but not unheard of.  Since you sound quite anxious, it's not unreasonable to demand a biopsy just to ease your mind, although whoever is interpreting the ultrasound thinks the mass have very benign ultrasound features and is trying to save you a (probably unnecessary) needle biopsy. There's no wrong way to proceed, and in your case demanding a needle biopsy so you can sleep would probably make the most sense--although if you decide to watch and wait, that's ok too.  Insurance won't give you any problems whichever way you go because both approaches are valid, even at your young age.
