Extremely Nervous

I had my yearly mammogram last week.  The tech showed me an area in my right breast that she was sure was a cyst but could not say for sure.  Yesterday day I received a call that I need to go in for an ultrasound on my right breast.  I am scared to death.  I am 48 and my mammogram's have always been normal.  Could the reason I am being called in to have an ultrasound is because there is something of concern?

Thank you so much.  You do keep making me feel better.  I had been reading that some people were told by the person doing their biopsy that it was probably a fibroadenoma and I was not told anything, just that she was not sure what it was, but to be prepared for the worst.  I was also told that she would have the results today.  I had not heard anything so I called.  Not only are they not in, but she left for the day at noon.  I feel like this doctor has done nothing but play with my emotions.  Oh well, now that I have vented, I will let you know once I know.  Thank you again so so much for everything!!!!!

An ultrasound is best at differentiating solid versus cystic (fluid filled) structures. But even if the lump in your breast is a fibroadenoma,it's still a solid lump and a biopsy is usually recommended to make sure that it is.So,try to be patient waiting for the results..I know it's so hard to be calm at this time, because we always think the worst.Keep in mind that you had your biopsy only 3 days ago and normally it takes 4 to 7 days to obtain the results.
I am keeping my fingers crossed for good results.
Take care...

I have not heard anything yet and I am about to explode.  I did look at mammo images of fibradenoma and mine did have the the same shape.  I know that does mean anything but it is hopeful.  Are they usually detected easily on an ultrasound?

Hi again,
First of all, with all due respect to your Surgeon,no one can be sure of anything unless a pathologist examines under the microscope the tissue extracted from the lump.I am afraid that I cannot tell or even guess what this lump could be,but I know that many suspicious lumps could turn up to be benign.
You are right that Fibroadenoma usually appear when a person is young, but they do develop also in older women.
I can only imagine your anxiety waiting for the results but as you well know, no one can avoid this stressful time.:(
Try to keep busy as much as you can and hopefully the waiting will seem much shorter.
Please do not jump to any conclusion right now..Keep in mind that many biopsies results turn up benign.
I wish you all the best and a favorable outcome.
ps :Please let us know,if you wish, about the results.

On thing I did not mention is that I did notice that fibroadenoma is more common in young girls and of course I am 48 so I just don't know what to think.

I went and had the ultrasound done and they recommended a biopsy.  I want yesterday for the biopsy and it was performed by a general surgeon.  When she looked at my mammogram she said to look at that it does not look overly suspicious and it did not feel like a lump, just that the area on the right breast felt fuller than the same area on the left.  When she performed her ultrasound she confirmed that it was not a cyst because she could tell that it was solid and it did have a little bit of shadowing.  She did mention several times that usually she can tell immediatly in a ultrasound if something is cancer and she will tell the patient that she is sure and to be prepared for the confirmation in the biopsy report, but she is not sure with this.  She told me this several times but when I asked her if I should be prepared to hear I have cancer she did say yes.  I am of course hoping she said this because she just is not sure from the ultrasound.  Thank you so much for all your help.

Hi,
Some lumps are sacs filled with fluid called Cysts (Benign) and some are solid nodules. When a nodule is detected in the breast, usually the doctor orders an Ultrasound to make sure that it's a cysts. If the nodule is solid it could be a fibroadenoma( also benign) but it has to be investigated further. If any lump found has suspicious characteristics, then a biopsy would be in order to find out the true nature of this lump.
I wouldn't worry too much about it if I were you, many lumps in breasts are benign in nature.Your Doctor is just being vigilant and wants to make sure by proceeding with an Ultrasound, which is an excellent tool to detect Cysts.
I can understand your anxiety, but unfortunately we have to go through these tests to find out what's going on.
I hope that the Ultrasound test will turn up to be just fine.
I wish you all the best....
