Gynecologist requesting second opinion

I'm so scared and don't know where to turn. I went last week for a mammogram and ultrasound because I have a palpable mass in the right breast. The nurse called 3 hrs after my test and told me the ultrasound was normal but my doctor wants me to get a second opinion with a breast specialist. Called for the appointment but can't get in until the middle of November. Is there something she's not telling me? Why would the radiologist call my dr. right away if it was normal? I am scared out of my mind

For some peace of mind until you get to see the breast specialist, as japdip suggested, I would definitely request a copy of the mammo & US reports. That way you'll have the radiologist's specific findings, not just what the nurse said. There should also be a BIRAD score on the reports that will give you more information on why the referral is being made. Like Japdip advised, I would also go over the report in detail with my gynecologist so that I understood exactly what the findings are, what he/she is thinking and to answer all my questions. It is always difficult waiting for the final results, but try to take one step at a time.
Worrying about "what ifs" won't change anything. It's always easier
(at least in my opinion and experieince) to deal with "what is" when you KNOW what is and aren't just imagining the worst.
Please let us know how things turn out, if you wish, by adding to this thread. I'm wishing you all the very best,
nc

Thank you for your response.  The waiting is just very difficult. I'm sure that it's nothing, just waiting on the confirmation is difficult.

When there is a palpable mass and Mammogram & Ultrasound have been done the next step is usually a consultation with a Breast Spedialist. I see nothing unsusual about this recommendation nor is the wait all that unusual. You know there is a mass and it needs to be diagnosed which is usually done by some type of biopsy. This is normally advised and done by a Breast Specialist. I'm sure that in the reports (Mammo & US) there was some conclusion as to what the mass may represent. You should discuss in detail both reports with your prescribing Physician. Regards ...
