Has anyone had bilateral mastectomy with reconstruction at same time?

I have been diagnosed with DCIS in both breasts.  My 2 choices are lumpectomy and mastectomy.  I have to decide soon.  My doctor and also my radiologist suggest bilateral mastectomy.  I would like to talk to someone who has gone through this.  Please respond.  Thanks.

HI, thanks for responding.  What do you mean by the 2nd recon?  I am in NY and am told they will do the mastectomy and immediate implants.  I appreciate any info you can give me.  Thanks again.

Yes - I had a double mastx and a diep - a free tram flap - at the same time. It was a 9 hour procedue and a very specialized surgery. Go to a major hospital. I also had chemo first and radiation after the surgery. My recon looks very good. Hope this helps.

Hi :) I had a bilateral mastecomy with immediate resconstruction in Nov 2008. I had the 2nd phase of resconstruction July 2009, I had DCIS in the left breast and invasive in the right breast at the same time.  In order to have the reconstruction- radiation canNOT play a part. The implants will turn to "rock" I was asked about 50 times prior to the surgery as to whether or not I was going to have to have Radiation. I was told that in choosing to have a bilateral mastecomy- radiation would not be necessary. Are you needing a plastic surgeon? Are you in Illinois?
