Cytology report help

Background quickly.. clear to slightly cloudy right nipple discharge only when squeezed for about 15 years. Mammograms and ultrasounds have all been normal. Had a total hysterectomy, everything including ovaries removed back in October 2012. Ever since, terrible surgical menopause symptoms, I am 41. Noticed two weeks ago, when I squeezed to check on that discharge ( I check monthly just to see if it's still there ) not only was the clear/slight cloudy discharge there, but I had two other ducts secreting a whitish discharge.

Went to ob yesterday, exam didn't feel lumps, prolactin level came back normal, had mammogram and ultrasound today, both normal and now this cytology... I know there were no malignant cells but what did it precisely show and could the menopause and hormonal imbalance cause the discharge to increase a bit if everything else is normal?

CYTOLOGY NON GYN

GROSS:
Miscellaneous fluid-Right breast discharge: Received are 2 fixed
slides, all Pap stained.

MICROSCOPIC:
The smears show some proteinaceous debris and a small number of red
blood cells. No malignant cells are identified. Negative cytology on a
nipple discharge sample, does not exclude neoplasm. Additional
evaluation would be recommended if the findings are clinically
suspicious or bloody. Clinical correlation is required.

I would imagine the Cytology found whatever normal cells are found in the substance present .... normal breast discharge. It's too bad that you have had to stress over this "normal" occurrence all this time and breast discharge is something that does happen normally. The discharge can be almost any color and consistency. Of course as you were advised, if it were bloody then some investigation is necessary. So from now on it's no squeezing, right ? Believe me you are not the first woman to ck. for drainage this way. Even occasional discharge (unless bloody) isn't cause for concern. Monthly self breast exams and yearly visits with your Dr. are still important with or without symptoms .... Kindest regards ....

Well, back when this got started, my ob said IF the discharge changes to bloody, he wanted to know about it. So how was I going to see if it changed without checking it with my monthly check for breast lumps if it only happens when squeezing? That is why I checked to see if it changed.

I know now to just not squeeze regardless and I will only report anything that happens spontaneously.

I understand the that cytology report is negative, but I am still wondering what it found even if it was benign.

The first point I would like to make is ... you should not be squeezing !!!!! This action sends a message to the brain and discharge will occur. I can't imagine why you would have been doing this for so many years. The report you furnish says quite definitely that the Cytology report is NEGATIVE. The part about further investigation is only mentioned IF the discharge is bloody. Please stop squeezing .... if you don't you will continue to experience discharge from that breast. Regards .....
