Mammogram

I had my mammogram done on August 20 and my period came on August 21. I received a letter from the gyne that the mammogram test impression is Asymmetry in the inner subareolar left breast and further evaluation recommended with additional mammographic vies and left breast ultrasound is required. I always do my mammogram yearly and never had a problem and did not have to go back for more testing. I am so worried do you think it is possible that due to the period the hormone has changed on the breast as i have been advised that never have a mammogram done if you have your periods a week before or after, i did not expect it to come but it did. Please can you tell me more about this as they also require as spot compression.

Hi Annie,
Asymmetry in the breast is really a non-specific finding and does not necessarily mean something bad.It could be due to many benign factors such as fibrocystic breast condition as well as breast density. Also it's possible that the mammogram pictures might not have been clear, due to swollen breasts when you started your menstruation
Being called back for a spot compression mammogram,is not at all unusual. When a mammogram shows an abnormality, the first thing is to do, is to have a spot compression mammogram that will focus on the area of concern for a better view. Sometimes the breast tissue can fold over on itself causing a density or shadow to appear.A spot compression will often smooth out the tissue and the abnormality will disappear  confirming that all is fine.If this happens,an Ultrasound may not be needed.
Please don't worry,I've read so many cases such as yours which turned up just fine.
Good luck and best wishes...
