Pleomorphic Microcalcifications

My mother went for her annual Breast exam on December of 2016 and these were the findings:

"The breast are composed of: Fatty and scattered fibroglandular tissue.

There is a grouping of tiny microcalcifications in the left breast, upper outer quadrant, middle third.

There is no dominant mass effect. There is no new area of focal architectural distortion, skin thickening or retraction.

Small intramammary lymph node is again seen in the left upper outer quadrant. "

She was then advised for an ultrasound and these were the findings:

" The breast parenchyma is heterogeneously dense.

Sonographic images of the right breast show: a 6 mm cyst in the 12:00 axis

Sonographic images of the left breast show: a 5 mm benign intamammary lymph node in the 2:00 axis"

She the had magnification views of the left breast and these were the findings:

"Magnification views of the left breast show a grouping of tiny pleomorphic microcalcifications in the upper-outer quadrant. These are mammographically suspicious. They extend over a distance of about 2 cm and are located approximately 7 cm from the nipple.

Recommendation: Biopsy of suspicious left breast microcalcification is recommended. BI-RADS catergory 4, suspicious abnormality."

Anyone with similar test results? We are so worried! She is 60 by the way and is scheduled for a biopsy on the 31st of this month. Such a long wait!

Hi,
Your mom’s tests report is really not concerning except for the “Pleomorphic calcifications” in her left breast. These types of calcifications are not cancer themselves, but can indicate problematic cells in the surrounding tissue. More often than not they turn out to be benign, however only a biopsy can truly determine if the cells are malignant or not. Since your mom’s mammograms and Ultrasound have shown no lumps or other suspicious abnormalities it’s a good sign. However if the cells are determined to be malignant it's undoubtedly extremely early (Stage 0), and thus completely curable. Some oncologists don't even consider stage 0 cancer, but rather a pre-cancerous condition.
Try not to worry too much since your Mom’s breast calcifications are still being evaluated and I hope that her upcoming biopsy will clarify things and results in benign findings.
All the best to you both..
