Probably Benign Diagnosis

I am a 35 yr old who just had her first mammo.  I got a letter in the mail saying I needed a diagnostic screening.  Just went for the diagnostic and ultrasound.  Was told the assymetrical tissue is "probably benign."  I need to go back in 6mos. for another screening.  I have had one fibroid cyst removed on the same breast 10 yrs ago.  My mom had breast cancer - stage 1 and also fibroid cysts on the same breast she lost.  She was also taking hormone replacements if that means anything.  My question is should I be seeing a specialist for this problem?  My obgyn doesn't think this is a big deal, but all of this is making me nervous.  I am not sure if I should just let it go or pursue a doctor who specializes in these things.  Any help you can give would be appreciated!

A baseline mammogram is often called back for additional views and ultrasound.  Being that the Radiologist has nothing to compare your new images to (say a mammogram 2 years ago), it can sometimes be difficult to say what is "normal" for your breast tissue.  In mammography, the Radiologist looks for "changes" in breast tissue over time.  So in 6 months, if all is unchanged, it is probably just "normal" breast tissue.   I can understand your concern with your mothers history, but seeing as how the Radiologist is being cautious with an early followup (and not recommending a biopsy ;) ), I think you can relax and have another check up in 6 months.
Best wishes......

Evidently the Radiologist has determined that only a re-check in 6 months is necessary at this point. Radiologists are very experienced since they read these films on a daily basis and I would trust his/her recommendation. If you are terribly uncomfortable with the advice then there is no reason not to seek the opinion of a Breast Specialist and have them review your films. Do whatever gives you peace of mind, OK ??  Regards....
