"My Radiologist had asked me to go USG tru cut biopsy for the lump which is in my right breast in the upper quadrant. It was done just two days ago and i am waiting for my report. After the biopsy I have been having a pain in my right shoulder and hand . Is it because of the biopsy or is it that the lump is malignant and the cancer has spread to other places. I also wish to know how long can one survive the breast cancer (post surgery and without surgery). Thanks & warm regards"

Breast cancer rarely causes any pain ... since your biopsy was only done two days ago I'm sure your pain is related to the procedure. There are many fine nerve endings throughout the body and when they are cut or otherwise disturbed they can object .... causing pain. As far as survival; breast cancer is very treatable these days. So much depends on what type of cancer and the various treatment plans for that type. Each case is different and treatment plans are tailored to that individual case. If a biopsy comes back as malignant then some type of surgery would certainly be recommended first and then additional treatments begun after a period of time to allow for healing. Kindest regards......

Hi there.

This pain that you are presently experiencing may just be from some injured nerve from the biopsy.  This should disappear in the next couple of days.  If not, then there may indeed be other problems such as musculoskeletal strain, or the possibility of cancer spread can also be entertained.

Without treatment, survival at 5 years for breast cancer is below 50%.  If successfully treated, survival can be as high as 90% in 20 years so treatment really makes a lot of difference.

I hope that the biopsy results would come out soon.  Regards.
