breast biopsy - went from fibroadenoma to abnormal?

I had a core needle biopsy 2 years ago, report was fibroadenoma, I was instructed to monitor w/ ultrasounds every 6 months.  Between my last 2 ultrasound the lump grew 4-5cm larger.  I had another core biopsy, this one detected "abnormal cells".  I am scheduled to have a lumpectomy for further testing.  I was under the impression fibroadenoma could not develop into anything further, so why would it now be showing as abnormal?  What could abnormal cells entail?

28yr old female.

Thanks.

Hi,
Don't be frightened....Most fibroadenomas are the simple type that do not raise your risk for breast cancer.
However Complex Fibroadenomas will not look organized and uniform like a simple one. Even though complex fibroadenomas don't become cancer, they may contain different kinds of hyperplasia. When atypical hyperplasia occurs,it just raises your risk of developing breast cancer in the future.
Atypical hyperplasia isn't cancer. It simply describes an increased accumulation of abnormal cells that have developed within the fibroadenoma and for this reason, doctors usually recommend removing the area of concern.
Your doctor is taking the proper steps dealing with your situation and recommending a lumpectomy, because if the atypical hyperplasia cells keep dividing and become more abnormal, your condition may be reclassified as carcinoma in situ or noninvasive breast cancer.
Wishing you benign findings on your upcoming lumpectomy and final pathology results.
All the best!.
