Hi Debbie,
I imagine your doctors have done MRIs over the years, to watch for a possible pituitary microadenoma? As you are probably aware, these are benign and can be left alone unless they enlarge and cause symptoms, in which case there are some new, minimally invasive ways of removing them.
As you are probably also aware, numerous medications, as well as high consumption of saturated fats, can cause a rise in prolactin; I assume this angle has also been investigated in your case?
I'm glad to be nearing the end of your radiation txs, and hope all goes well thereafter!
Best wishes,
bluebutterfly
Please let me know if you find anything out. I was diagoned with Estrogen pos. breast cancer in Nov 2010, under went a double mastectomy and total hysterectomy in March after trying to shrink the tumor on Tamoxifin. I have had problems with my prolactin since 1990 (discovered when I was trying to have my 3rd child), after parlodel did not work because of the way it needed to be taken for me to handle it, we decided to not worry about the irregular periods and go on.
We are now at the end of May and I am almost done with radiation, but the thought of my prolactin has come forward again. My lab test revealed that it is at 61, considering that I've now postmenopausal because of the surgery, studies show I should be down to 1.
I know I will be meeting with my oncologist in a few weeks, but the idea just has me worried all over again and wondering what's next.
Thank you and I hope thatyou are doing well!!!!!!
Debbie

Hi,
Elevated prolactin levels in women have long been associated with increased risk for breast cancer. I have come across studies on this relationship dating as far back as 1985 and as recent as 2007.
Overall, the available data support the hypothesis that prolactin increases risk of breast cancer. The largest epidemiologic study of postmenopausal women reports a 34% increase in risk of breast cancer among women with the highest compared to lowest quartiles of circulating PRL levels.
Best wishes...
