Dear lynsey180: There are several factors to be considered when a lump is discovered. One is what it feels like to the physician. The others are what it looks like on imaging. In many cases, a doctor can feel pretty confident in what the lump feels like but will order imaging (mammogram and/or ultrasound) to confirm his suspicions or to make certain that there is nothing that will require further evaluation. If anything shows up on the mammogram or ultrasound that cannot be explained, further evaluation will likely be recommended.
