lump under my nipple

I am 28 years old.  I just found a lump in my right breast almost right under my nipple.  It is about the size of the tip of my index finger.  When I touch it it moves around and it is hard to the touch, a bit sensitive when I put pressure on it. I heard that lumpiness in breasts is common close to your monthly period, but I had my period over two weeks ago.  Is this something I should worry about?  Should I go to a doctor and have it checked out?  Or is this just a silly concern?

Thank you for your advice.  I did the self-breast exam and did not find any other lumps or abnormalities.  I am going to see my physician next week. (never had a breast exam before).

I didn't even know that one could have breast infections!  Hopefully that's all it is.

Hi,
A slight lumpiness and pain alonwith breast tenderness is common due to the hormonal fluctuations associated with the menstrual cycle. But as you say you are well past your cycle by 2 weeks what can be done is do a complete breast self exam and see for any other abnormal findings that you may notice. In addition schedule an appointment with your physician and get yourself evaluated clinicall. It could be an infective process for which your physiciam might prescribe you some painkillers and antibiotics.
