microcalcifications follow up 6 months

I am 41 and had my first screening mammogram.  The report indicated multiple microcalcifications, which appeared "morphologically benign"  a six month follow up was suggested beacuse there were no old films to compare.  How worried should I be?  Are microcalcifications common?

Dear k17:  Microcalcifications are small calcium deposits found within the breast tissue. There are different types of microcalcifications, and based on their pattern on the mammogram it gives the radiologist clues as to their cause. For instance microcalcifications that are more scattered are probably due to a benign (non-cancerous) cause, a

Microcalcifications do occur normally in breast tissue. When they are seen in groups or certain patterns there is cause for concern and further investigation is recommended. Evidently since a 6 mo. follow-up was recommended there was no particular pattern seen on mammography. DO follow the recommendation for follow-up though.
