I am 35 years old. My grandmother on my mother's side had breast cancer. I have had 6 lumpectomy's on my right breast ( all have been fibroademoas). I have several more solid area and 3 cyst in my right breast. My breast are so dense that a mammogram is not readable. The scar tissure that has built up in my breast feels like a golf ball. I have been consulting my doctor about having a prophylactic mastectomy because if cancer does appear in my right breast they will never be able to see it. What do you think?
Dear bgore: This is a complex issue. Our recommendation is that you may benefit from seeing a beast specialist and/or a genetic counselor who can better determine your risk. Depending on your grandmother’s age at diagnosis, her cancer may not significantly increase your risk. A prophylactic mastectomy is a drastic alternative to concerns about imaging. It may be that other imaging techniques such as MRI would be an option for you. A medical breast specialist can often be found affiliated with large academic medical centers .
