Hi,
There are many benign conditions that causes breast pain, including stress.
The pain you are experiencing could be also caused by a pulled or inflamed muscle.Of course there is no muscle tissue in the breast itself, so it is not possible to pull a muscle there. However one can damage the ligaments or the muscles that support the breasts. If you have heavy breasts, you'll find it more comfortable wearing a good supportive bra even when sleeping.
Another possible condition causing breast pain, could be Costochondrotis which is an inflammation caused by a certain forms of arthritis or fibromyalgia.
Anyone can develop costochondritis, but patients with pre-existing inflammatory conditions such as lupus need to be evaluated by a physician.
It would be a good decision though to see a Breast Specialist to make sure, fist of all, that nothing is wrong with the breast itself. If all is fine with your breast, then your health care provider could investigate all other possibilities I mentioned above or other conditions.
Best wishes...

I am 55 and no cycles anymore. No birth control for yrs and yrs.  No hormonal pills.I do not smoke and do not take pills accept Tylenol Arthritus as needed for my Arthritus and many other aches. I have been told I have Lupus and Reumatoid Arthritus.  I have also found out I do not have the cyst I was told I had before.  I have been told it looks like stress is the factor. I am concerned as to why the left breast aches more than the right and it worsens when my bra is off and lessens with it on. I am going for a stress test my Dr wants me to do and looks like I am going toget an apt with a breast specialist in a week or so if the pain doesn't pass soon .

Hi,
Painful nipples can be the result of many causes. You don't state your age,but if you are still menstruating, the pain could be due to your monthly cycle and it's probably caused by hormonal fluctuations.
If you have irregular menses,or are on birth control pills, or pre-menopausal,or taking any drug containing hormones, this could also be caused by hormonal changes.
This symptoms would not be a sign of breast cancer especially when the pain is happening on both your breasts.
It would definitely be advisable to see your physician particularly if the condition worsen and includes itchiness, redness and nipple discharge.
I hope you'll feel better soon...
All the best...
