I have to agree that suicide and mental illness go hand in hand, also when they feel there is no other way out.

Well number one....if a person takes their own life, that is not called "murder." If it were, suicides that are not successful the people would be charged by law. And they are not. They are usually put under doctors care whether it be where they have to stay in a facility or  sometimes released to be watched by their family.

When a person commits suicide there are times where friends/family  are taken by surprise and may not have even known the person was "going thru" anything."

Why is that? It is because depression and or mental illness can at times go unrecognized and not get the proper medical treatment. The person going thru it can at times just see themselves as hopeless with feelings of despair and in some cases they think this is just part of their makeup which prevents them from seeking help.  Many times they are ashamed to speak to anyone of their condition because they feel they are "weak." In most cases that would be seen more if its in the case of a man.

I unfortunately have known people who have committed suicide and I know someone who attempted but failed, and the person that failed at suicide has now received proper medical treatment and is no longer in a state of depression and is thankful that they did not succeed because they are now enjoying their life with the proper medical treatment.

So heres the thing.  Many people think that if a person just thinks "happy thoughts" and maybe think of all that Jesus has done for them that they will just get well one two three.

What people fail to realize is that severe depression is an "organic disease."  There is something going on in the brain chemically when there is depression and or mental illness. Serotonin - the chemical in the brain that affects a persons mood is found to be very low in persons with mental illness/ depression.

Now heres where the confusion lies. WE ALL have had moments of sadness in our lives. Whether it be your kid is having a hard time at school and you feel bad or maybe you lost your job and you are bummed out about it. So as Christians what do we do?

Well we pick up our bible and start reading the Word and YES most times while "renewing our mind" we receive "perfect peace" as God says we would.  BUT our temporary "feeling sad,"depressed, is not the same as someone who is clinically depressed and suicidal.  And if anyone says well yeah Myown, I had thoughts of suicide already.....well, many people have had moments like that, but that does not mean you were clinically depressed and that Jesus healed you and so now everyone should just call on the name of Jesus and get healed and if they don't, well where's their faith. Thats not right to feel a person is not right with God or going to hell because they were "mentally not well," at the time of their death.

I have a friend who gets dialysis and is waiting for a kidney. She is a born again Christian.  Her brother suffers from terrible depression. Manic depression. He had attempted suicide one time but failed.

IF my friend stops going for her kidney dialysis she will die for lack of treatment. Should she stop treatment and just trust God for her healing? Or should she continue to get dialysis and trust God to work thru the doctors? Of course she could stop dialysis and God CAN give her a miracle, but I think that wouldn't be wise to take that chance and I dont think she "lacks faith" just because she is getting dialysis. And would it be murder if she stopped getting treatment and died? Because without the proper medical treatment death would most likely be the result.

Now on the other hand IF her brother stops the meds for "his disease" of depression, the outcome of that would be the same as his sister if she stopped dialysis- he would die. Why? Well because mental illness can sometimes cause a person to take their own life. His serotonin and whatever else that goes wrong with the brain while not on the meds would cause him not to "be himself" and he would possibly attempt to take his own life again, maybe who knows.

So there it is, 2 diseases, one is with the kidneys and one with the brain, and stopping treatment in both cases leads to death.  Lets put it this way...No one in their right mind would commit suicide.

One other thing....Though the Antidepressant drugs, have helped many people who have severe depression, these drugs have also been the "cause" of 'young people' getting worse while on them and in fact some then taking their own life. My friends son got worse on Antidepressants and he told his doctor he was feeling worse and the doctor felt he should stay on it and unfortunately he committed suicide at the age of 23 with his whole life ahead of him. He was a born again Christian, who suffered terribly with depression from a young age.

God has compassion and there is no way this young fellow went to hell. He could not help himself.  The doctor was at fault as far as I am concerned. He should have tried different meds and he didn't listen to this young mans cry for help. His mother was one to believe the doctor would know whats best. I don't think I have to tell you how she feels.  But guess what? Her "depression" from her son dying was NOT a chemical imbalance in her brain. Her depression was from letting a doctor take total charge of her sons medical condition and so that was not the same as the type of depression her son had.....so with "renewing of her mind" thru the Word and forgiving of herself for what was obviously a bad choice, but hindsight is 20/20, she  is not going thru any more type of "sadness" but instead just misses her son but is confident in knowing that she WILL see him again and hold him in her arms once again...So her type of "depression," was what many of us have had which falls more into the category of "situational" and not "organic," so in time she overcame it and during it, though sad, she didn't lose site of reality in knowing that in time she would be Okay or as Okay as a mother could be in her unfortunate circumstance.

So mental illness might not be recognized by all, but I think if you doubt what I say, do a study on brain chemicals like serotonin and check out how it affects a persons thoughts/mind and  after you study,if you still think that person should just believe God for their healing then tell a kidney patient that too and maybe a cancer patient too. In the end, not getting treatment for any of those diseases can cause death. And again, I am not saying that God cannot provide a miracle for any of the situations I mentioned, yes He can, but proper medical treatment should always be recognized or factored in too.

Mental illness is not always viewed or recognized as an "organic disease" and thats why there is sometimes a very "sad" outcome.

So, thats my take.
Take care,
MO

Ok here is my take on the whole thing for what it's worth.
Sorry I didn't read through all the posts, too much to do not enough time.
Life (God breathed Life) is a Gift of God, no sin is greater than any sin, you commit one you commit them all..the law can not be kept or what Christ did on the cross was all in vain..God tells us that He Who knew no sin became sin and it pleased the Father...God is a Judging God but in His Grace He gave us His Son...you all get that.
I just think that people who commit suiside are sick in their head and if they are Saved they go to heaven.
Keeping the law is impossible for everyone and it only leads to the need of Jesus.
From what I have read through Scripture is the only unforgivable sin is blaspheme and denying Christ.

Suicide can happen to ANYONE. 2 weeks ago, the Pastor of a Catholic Church, the leader of this parish, committed suicide (they say self infected, but do not go into details, so I am assuming shot himself) in the Rectory of the Parish!!!! I am Catholic and this shows that satan is everywhere and it can happen to the person you least expect. We were all shocked to hear that a priest committed suicide, but I worked for the Archdiocese of Chicago and learned that although they are men who have taken an oath to the church, they are men and humans and imperfect, prone to sin and be tempted just like the rest of us....Judy

What if they start the suicide, then regret it and ask for forgiveness but it's too late to reverse the suicide and they die anyway?
Like I said, I believe that teenage neighbor of mine, who did love Jesus but struggled with depression, etc., I believe she regretted what she did because she was only 15 and teenagers are impulsive. I believe she was just crying out for help. And I believe she's with the Lord. There's nothing you can say that will make me change my mind on that. It's not up to me to judge this. Do I believe she will be judged and held accountable? Yes. But I believe she's with Jesus.

What happens if they suicide? Would they still be saved then? Of course not, the Word is quite clear on that issue. Unless they could repent after they had committed murder (quite hard if you suicide!), they would not be saved, irrespective of any past commitment to the Lord Jesus. (cf. Exodus 20:13; Matt 5:17-21; Matt 15:18-20; Matt 19:18; Rom 1:18-32; Rom 13:9; James 2:10-11; and many more).

What a deep subject and everyone answered so nicely and respectfully.

I do believe they are forgiven, I mean, life is so precious, and to live is what drives people, to want to end that life, a person must almost be out of their mind with grief or an emotional illness. I feel sorry for them, and I also feel sorry for the loved ones and family left behind. I know it hurts our dear Lord for this to happen, but, as everyone has stated, only He knows our heart and what is going on.

I pray nightly for my dear dad, he says he is not a Christian, and if he were diagnosed with a fatal disease, he would kill himself, oh, how this worries me, I have tried to tell him why he should not think like this, but, it does not help, so, I can only pray for his salvation and change of heart.

Hugs to all and hugs for all your mature, wonderful answers.

Amen saints thanks 4ur post! This goes 2 show our maturity as christians in christ here! Such a touchy subject but something 2 take n2 serious consideration!
The reason why i posted this topic was because back n 94 when i was satans puppet! As you guys have read in my about me section of my profile. I was in a dark area in my life because of all of the souls i was destroying by selling drugs! So 1 nite i was on the telephone with my wife who was my girlfriend @ the time. I told her that i was depressed & that i had nothing 2 live 4 anymore! & i remember having this 9 milimeter gun pointed 2wards my dome! & i wanted 2 squeeze the trigger so bad but the spirit of God would not let me! So here i am 15 yrs later spreading Gods word just like everyone else here is!! God had a purpose in my life!! bs4c:

My daughter was on anti-depressants for awhile. I wasn't real crazy about the idea but they started it on her after she had been admitted when she hurt herself at the age of 15. That was the last time she tried to hurt herself. However, she didn't like the side affects of the anti-depressants. They made her sleepy. She still was struggling though till shortly after she turned 16 she went on a youth retreat and gave her life to Christ. She came back a different girl. She loves the Lord and her faith is real. She's really matured this last year.
However, she does occasionally struggle with depression but it's not as devastating as it used to be. She has not had the temptation to hurt herself again but she does still deal with depression off and on. I think part of it is her age and once she's a little older things will calm down. She also feels things deeply so if a friend hurts her feelings or something she really feels it. I think a lot will change once she's out of high school. High school can be stressful to begin with. Neither one of us wants her to try the anti-depressants again because the depression is manageable.

Even in the bible some of the greatest prophets had times of depression and even wished they were dead and asked God to kill them! God never admonished them for their feelings. Instead, He made sure they had the rest and nutrition they needed and that usually helped. God knows that without proper rest and nutrition we are more susceptible to all kinds of things, including depression. I think the way He treated the prophets shows He understands.

I attempted suicide as a teenager. Spent 3 day's in a coma and in ICU. Without going into the details (too long), I survived and had very beautiful and very real out of body experience and I knew there was hope for me. I know one day I will stand before Almighty God and will be held accountable for attempting against my life, but I asked Almight God to forgive my weakness and for offending Him. I know that God is a loving, kind, merciful. forgiving, just God and He will take care of the soul's that suffered so much in life, where they were not aware of the gravity of their actions. We must also pray for these souls, they need our prayers, mass intentions, candles to light their souls, and have faith and trust that God will help heal the soul that arrived before their time and show them the way to a peaceful eternity.

There were times at my darkest times, I've sometimes entertained some really negative thoughts about life. Battling depression is no fun. Last year was one really tough year. I believe there is a biological element to depression and suicidal thoughts. Some antidepressants *do* make it worse and cause it. I found that out after being put on the wrong prescription.

After one really difficult day, my grandma and i realized the med was making things far worse. We got off that in a hurry. I went for a long time without a med and I felt better. Then depression started creeping in again and I went on another med on a low dose. So far I've been feeling better and more confident. Part of it is also trying new things and getting out of the house more. To combat depression, I find it helps to get active in real life activities. (even if I may not feel like it.)

One song I've found to really help during those rough times is Church of Rhythm - Life Is Worth Fighting For. I highly recommend it for anyone, especially those who find themselves in dark long nights feeling really down and not able to shake those off easily.

I hope God does. I would have liked to meet my uncle on dad's side. From the sounds of it, he may have been a lot like me, considered very intelligent and maybe a little out there with some of his ideas, but very talented. My grandma's heart is still broken over his loss, even after so many years.

He took his own life at age 18 to "terminal" depression. Nothing could help the pain he felt.

What up bold- I had a boss that committed suicide with a shotgun in his mouth and he was a very well to do business man and big leader in the community.
I believe he was born again, we went to bible studies, he shared alot ect.....
Then when the building market went bad and I guess he was in worse financial shape than any of us knew he wrote a letter, sat in his office and used the gun.
My co worker in the a.m. found him and called to tell me. I was crushed, I looked up to this man and learned from him on how to be an HONEST person in business and we even kept a code of values to go by. I still am not sure what to think, even though I know Jesus is in control I think of him often and it leaves a hole. I don`t want to speculate about suicide cuz I can`t even imagine what is going on when it happens..........

Yes God knows their heart.......That is why i believe they are saved.  The ones who do commit suicide are mentally ill.  I cannot believe for a minute that God would turn his back on people who are so ill.  Isnt he a God of love?  Arent we all his children?  It is not murder in my eyes.

Suicide is forgiven...is that fact of course not but how can you hold someone accountable for killing themselves due to depression. Depression is a disease like others out there, and if not treated will bring that person to suicide.

The God I know is forgiving, he judges the wicked and has mercy on the good. Just because someone does kill themselves does not make them wicked. I

If a person commits an act like murder and then chooses suicide then that is very different and should be judged accordingly, but over all the preception (in a lot of circles) that suicide is not forgiven I believe is false.

But this is my opinion.

Bold, those people jumped out the window because they knew without a shadow of a doubt that they were not getting out of those buildings. They were trapped. So, they had to choose between burning to death or jumping out the window. I think these were normal people who under normal circumstances would never have contemplated suicide. I don't know if any of us could say what we would have done in that same situation. They knew they were going to die. I don't think I consider what they did suicide. They were trying to escape the overwhelming smoke and flames. What would we have done if we had been in that same situation?
