ADENOPATHY (Neck)

I had a CAT scan last week and the written report shows:
Results:  There are 2 enlarged left-sided Laparoscopic lymph nodes.  The largest one measures approximately 1.5 cm in diameter.  There are additional shoddy lymph nodes throughout the neck (left greater than right) which do not meet strict size criteria.  There are innumerous subcentimeter nodules within the premalar subcutaneous fax (right greater than left). Findings best seen upon axial images 26-32.There is a prominent jugular vein in the region of the patient's palpable abornmality.

Impression: (1)   Mid nonspecific left-sided adenopathy.  (2)  Innumerous nonspecific nodules within the premalar subcoutaneious fat.  Findings may be seen in patients with connective tissue disorders such as scleroderma.  Findings could also be related to chronic trauma."

Is this anything I should be concerned with?

Dr.Anitha,

Thank you so much for your prompt reply.  I have been worrying about this and reading all kinds of negative information on the internet about the "possibilities" of what this could be.

One last comment.....when I swallow, it feels what I can only describe as a "flem ball" at the base of my throat.  My doctor cannot see anything.  It is not painful or interfere with my eating. I do not have a sore throat.  It has been this way for about 6 years.  Since the CAT scan did not pick up anything, I'm wondering if you have any idea what this could be?
Many thanks for your kindness.

Hi, lymph nodes greater than one cm are significant. Lymph are protective mechanisms of the body and they 'trap' the infecting source causing enlargement of lymph nodes. The infection can be from the draining skin or the organs. The enlarged node could be due a throat infection. So, check to see if they are persistently enlarged after a few days. The other causes for enlarged nodes are tumors or inflammations to name a few. The non specific nodules could be due to an old infection or trauma. So, you don't need to worry about the report. Regards.
