Melanoma?

I've had this small lump on my thigh for at least 5 years (too scared to show my doc, stupid I know). It almost came out of no where. It doesn't have a rigid border but it's not exactly perfectly smooth either. It's tan in color but some days looks a little lighter or darker. It's a little smaller then an "pencil eraser" and it is raised from the skin. It's been the same size for years now. It doesn't hurt at all and it's not hard. Living in NYC I don't get to sun bathe much and where it is on my thigh it is almost NEVER exposed to the sun. I'm a 33 year old female in fairly good health (aside from anxiety disorder). I know the best thing I can do is get it checked out, which I will SOON. But in the mean time, do you think this sounds like something I should really worry about?

Good luck. Most of the time they are nothing at all, but might as well put your mind at ease and get it checked. Let us know how it goes.

I will, thank you. I really can't call it a mole though. It's more like some kind of growth. It scares me because I've waited so long to check.

I'd get it checked. I had the same thing. A mole that I'd had for ever. Didn't hurt but was raised a bit. It turned out I was positive, but because I got it checked, I was able to get it removed before it spread and have been cancer free for 3 years now. Getting it checked is painless, so there's no reason not too. With skin cancer, it's all about detecting it early.

Good luck.

Hi, I found a great site that has a bunch of pictures and descriptions of melanoma. My Dad had a melanoma on his shoulder and fortunately it was very slow growing and he had a large portion of his shoulder (actually behind his shoulder) removed. Most melanoma's are not slow growing and if you are worried, I think the only way to relieve your fears are to get it checked out. Of course, the earlier the treatment for melanoma as with most cancers the better the results. Anyway, maybe this website will alleve your fears. Follow the instructions that I have written below the site info and best of luck and good health. Ellen

In the upper right search box type: melanoma
click search. Then click melanoma in the Search Results... box. Scroll down to near bottom of page and you'll see the pictures.
