Can renal cyst be cancerous?

20 year old female. I found a lump in the upper lumbar region of my back after palpating the area about 6 months ago, accompanied with pain. Finally went to the doctor about it and she ordered an ultrasound. Weeks before my ultrasound, the doctor tested my urine and blood to test kidney function. All was within normal limits. Got my ultrasound results back today. There are calcifications in both kidneys. The doctor said that my left kidney (the painful one) was slightly larger than my right kidney and that there appeared to be a cyst. Blood was also found in my bladder on the ultrasound. A CT will be done soon and my doctor is referring me to a urologist. I asked my doctor about cancer, and she said that cysts don't always turn out to be cancer.. but not that they couldn't be. So.. I guess I'm just curious if anyone else has had these symptoms and what it turned out to be? I'm such a hypochondriac. I almost wish I wouldn't have found out anything about the results.

Like your doctor said, sometimes cysts can mean cancer, but other times they don't- it sounds like your doctor is getting more tests ordered to ensure every avenue is explored?

I know that when you don't know all the answers of these medical tests it can be so hard to wait!  Hang in there, and let us know how you are doing.
