Thyroid swelling

My wife, who is a nursing mother, has swelling on the right lobe of the thyroid. The problem began as a pain on a spot about 15 days ago. 10 days back she had a bout of common cold and sorethroat. She has developed a small painful lump on the right of her neck, an inch above the collarbone in the last 4-5 days. We consulted a doctor who advised US scan and blood test for T3, T4 and TSH. We are waiting to get the tests done on the weekend.

Her ESR count was high 40-50 during pregnancy and afterwards. The last time when ESR was checked in March the rate was 53. Could this be an indication of any malignancy?

She has no fever, but now she is feeling  pain on the left of the neck too, at the boottom of the left lobe.

Do you have any suggestions? Please advice

could be a form of graves disease which is cause by hyperthyroidism and occurs after pregnancy too, maybe mention it to the doc. especially the puffy eyes bit , look it up and see if she has those symptoms, thank god its not a malignancy .

It is definitely hyperthyroidism. But it is only the effect. What is causing it is still to be confirmed. She has a swollen thyroid and acute pain on her neck which is radiating to ears. Going by what happened in the case of one of our friends, it looks like painful subacute thyroiditis caused by virus. But doctor says it is just hyperthyroidism and gave her antithyroid drugs. But the pain is taking a toll on her. Doctor says it is ok to breastfeed. She is feverish in the evenings and had paracetamol.

She looks tired and anaemic with puffy eyes. Hope this will go away in a few days.
Any opinion?

We got the US  done today. The impression is multi-nodular goitre. Awaiting the thyroid blood test results to reach tomorrow. We met the doctor with the US report. He said clinically it appears to be hyperthyroidism, after evaluating other symptoms such as high pulse rate. He ordered some more blood test including ESR and sugar.

We are bit confused with the use of the terms multi-nodualr goitre and hyperthyroidism alternatly. Could some one give her opinion on this.

Have an appointment with the physician on Monday again.

Thanks for the opinions. The doctor had a close look at the swelling and said it looked like tendernes of the right lobe of the tyroid. Then she ordered the tests to clear any doubts of malignancy. She also said such lumps occur in some women in preganancy and postpartem.

This evening my wife had a bit of fever too. The pain has spread to the left side of the neck now, probably on to the left lobe.

We will get the tests done and see the specialist with the reports. Will get back to you with what doctor says.

Hi reab, it is a possibility she could have cancer but at the same time there are alot of other things it could be.  You can develop nodules on the thyroid as well.  Did the dr look at her or just order the tests then you go in for an appt? There are a ton of lymph nodes in the clavicle region near the thyroid, they are the clavicular nodes and they can swell from the cold.  The lymph nodes help take germs, bacteria, ect out of the body.  Let us know what the tests show.  hugss.

I dont think so, i have an over active thyroid problem it started about 6 years ago after my son was born, this maybe the problem . other then that it sounds to me like a throat infection , strep throat, ask your doc to take some swabs if it carries on, hope your wife is ok :)
