long term smoker study

I am a long term smoker and because of this, I joined a study.  The first few years that I got the CT scan nothing was found.  This year, they found a spot 2cm on my lung.  They want me to wait 6-12 months to do another CT scan.  Is this wise?  My doctor says I should just wait because radiation is bad for you.  I am going nuts here! 2cm sounds really big to me!! Should I get a second opinion as to waiting 6-12 months?  Thank you
