6 yr old Maine Coon with possible kidney disease

First time on this web site. I have a 6 year old male Maine Coon (cat), who has been the most lovable cat.  Tonight he started hissing at our other cats for no reason. We have a kitty box available, and "Big Kitty" never uses it.  He has always gone outside to do his business. He's been in and out of the kitty box all night, and nothing is happening. Then he goes under the coffee table to clean himself and he growls, like he is in pain. He is a large cat, 26 pounds, as most Maine Coon's are big cats. He has always ate Science Diet 7+ years, just because our other cats eat it, and all have remained healthy. Does this sound to anyone like beginning kidney failure? Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks, Moussie51

Yep, sounds like your cat has a blockage. He needs to be given antibiotics. This condition is very painful, and if left untreated, the consequences can be deadly. That diet needs to go. Science Diet may have worked for your other cats, but now your kitty needs more moisture in his foods. They will probably give you prescription foods at the vet's, and this will hopefully help your kitty.

You need to take him ASAP. Please come back with updates, and let us know if you need anything else.

No, this is not kidney failure!  This sounds like he's in pain straining to urinate-the growling after attempting to go IS pain.  This sounds like a urinary blockage or a bladder infection.  The cat needs to be seen ASAP neither of these conditions will just go away on their own.  The urinary blockage can be deadly.  Please take him to the vet without delay.

Please let me know how he's doing.
