CAT BITES

I'm sure everyone is aware of how dangerous a cat bite can be, they are one of the worst for infections and complications thereafter....I've seen how bad one can be. so anyone getting a severe 'deep' bite from a cat should seek medical care, antibiotics sometimes even IV administered are necessary.

Having said that, my Sami is a biter. he has a behavioral problem due to being mistreated by a former owner, he was going to be put down when I decided to take him home. I have no kids around, my grandkids come occasionally they are older and know not to touch Sami. he's the most loveable dear cat anyone can have...BUT he SNAPS...he has a temper and will turn on me even without warning. I put up with many bites over the last 5 yrs. and I'm getting much better at knowing what to avoid so not to set him off.
for instance combing!!
Therefore I don't get bit often anymore, today was an exception. I got a dilly....I was trying to comb him and got to close to a no no area(his back end)...so he nailed me, sunk his teeth into my forearm, not superficially but than again not a to the bone bite either(like he can do).
I've always treated with a good washing and peroxide even when it did get slightly infected and thankfully was able to heal ok.

Today I am trying a new approach, I've been doing alot of reading on holistic measures as most of you can tell by my reply's on some posts.
There are some interesting products out there, one of them is COLLOIDAL SILVER (CS)(both internally and externally) for many human as well as animal treatments.
I got onto this for an allergy that Sami has and occasionally breaks out in open sores on his face EGC eosinophilic granduloma complex....another story!
anyway I found out to use this topically on the sores(these sores have become very infected by him rubbing at times). I have used colloidal silver on 2 large recent sores....it helped alot BUT not totally.  than I read to add turmeric with it....and I couldn't believe it the sore was gone overnight!!   that was a week ago he's still clear.

Therefore, I'm getting long winded sorry. The point I am getting at is with the bite I received today I am trying the same combo on myself.....I've applied twice now over the past 4 hrs. no swelling and no redness, I have 4 punctures 2 are smaller. I have 4 very bruised circles about the size of quarters. I will post tomorrow on how this is panning out.

Nancy, Opus and others....I talked with my daughter, a RVT at Gulfcoast Surgical Center in Houston, recently and she was telling me that MRSA is rampant in the pet population. They see it all the time she said.  It can be transmitted from animals to humans. It's a resistant strain of bacteria that doesn't respond to the usual antibiotics and there is a test to determine whether positive or negative...for pets, as well as owners.

Since I volunteer at an animal shelter cat bites and scratches are pretty much an occupational hazard for me.  Got bit a couple of weeks ago on the back of my hand near the knuckles and it was a bit swollen for a couple of days.  I just wash the wound thoroughly, use ice if it swells, and use some neosporin ointment and it fine in a couple of days.  Poor cat that bit me had to be quarantines for a couple of weeks though,

Yep, just go to u-tube and type in blue man to see the interview with the today show, that is if you care to. I'm sure you aren't going to turn blue overnight! LOL But I'll bet the darn thing hurts! Feel better

Good grief Charlie Brown! You're not supposed to get bit! I'm very sorry to hear he nailed you but the silver should help as a topical. We have a man here in Tacoma that has skin that is blue, and I mean as blue as the blue text on these pages from ingesting too much
colloidal silver. So your wise to be skeptical. I've heard alot of good things as well as bad with it. By the way, they say that man will always be blue. I'll try to find the link for you. But in the mean time, sorry and your in my prayers to heal quickly. My neighbor was just nailed by his parrot( also emotionally disturbed) These poor animals! And people too!

I agree, while I couldn't get into the site you gave, I did find a site that addresses that or a similar report.
http://www.thesilveredge.com/cr.shtml

all I could find out from holistic sources says its similar to all the bad press we are constantly being warned about with any homeo supplement &/or vitamin.

A large manufacturer of CS (colliodial silver) NATURAL IMMONOGENICS claim they couldn't get cooperation from EFSA to provide study protocols thus making it impossible to get approval for use in the European Union.

It cannot be sold under the title of 'nutritional supplement'
However its apparently been used for hundreds of years world wide as a powerful antibacterial and antifungal agent.
Hospitals use nano silver particles on their dressings to treat infections and burns.

Yes be wary of all claims both pro and con. I'm always a skeptic. I read and trial everything with precaution.

Homeopathic Vets do sell and recommend it to treat eye and ear infections and mites (in dilute form)..........for now I will stick with topical use, until I know more.

It was on Consumers Report website.  If we had to heed every warning that was put out we would all have to live in a bubble and then we would have a warning about the products the bubble was made of!!!

Sara, the url won't bring up the article for me, I've tried it twice. interesting. I know there are some of the brands I've heard not to use. and possibly the danger is using internally????
check the address again if you have time and let me know if it's copied wrong or why I can't bring it up.

Otherwise, my punctures are doing very well girls...one is healed over, the other 3 have small scabs on, I have bruising but NO sign of infection. the muscle around abt the size of a baseball is still very tender....wow they have powerful jaws.

I repeat to anyone having a deep bite that this is nothing to fool around with. if theres swelling or angry redness the following morning seek medical attention, yes alot of bacteria in their mouths PK!

aw Opus...I'm sorry Sami snapped at you. Thank you for posting this. Anyone who owns cats should know about this, even if their pets are sweet all the time. They have good and bad days and can turn on you and bite. So it's also a good idea not to go beyond their limits.

By the way, a saw on TV that cats had 16 types of bacteria in their mouths. Dogs have more...about 56 if I remember correctly. But either way it is good to be proactive and know what products work best for humans who get bitten by their pets  :-)
