Cat breathing heavily

Hi doctor,

My 14 yr old cat has been breathing heavily at random times, whether he's sleeping or not. Recently he's been coughing a lot but nothing comes out. A while ago whenever he's coughing, he'd vomit. I was wondering what's his problem.

Take your cat to the vet immediately. I had 1 cat who breathed oddly and we thought he was purring and we realised he wasn't and it turned out he had a lung tumor; and another cat who caught an upper respiratory inf from my other 2 and coughed up phlegm-i didn't know that coughing is NOT NORMAL till i took him and found out he had pneumonia. What I was told is unless your cat is coughing up a hairball, coughing is not normal; and the impaired breathing definitely sounds like something is not right-please bring your cat to the vet right away.
