Cat won't drink and cries

I have a neutered male cat that will be 15 in May. The last week or so, he's been sitting next to his water bowl not drinking and meowing. At first I thought the water might not be fresh enough, so I rinsed the bowl and refilled it, but he just stares at the bowl and cries. He was drinking to the point that I'd have to refill the bowl every day; now if it's only down about a half an inch, so he does drink some, but not as much as usual. What could be the problem?

Did your vet test his urine?  And, how were his kidney levels by the blood work?

This really does sound like this is kidney disease or possibly diabetes, especially if you've noticed weight loss and decreased appetite.  Diabetes may make them hungrier than usual and kidney disease causes the opposite.

Not thyroid according to a test she did. Her advice was to wait and see what happens, but if his behavior continues, bring him back.

Hello. It sounds like your elderly kitty is suffering from either Hyperthyroid disease, Kidney failure, or both, as HyperT can lead to renal failure.  The excessive water intake is a clear sign for both issues.  Why he suddenly stopped, I don't know.  It's heartbreaking to hear he is thirsty and cries, but isn't drinking.  I'm sure it hurts your heart too.  It's time to take kitty to the vet.  I would do that ASAP.
