Ear problems??

My kitten who is 11 weeks old has been shaking her head a lot the past few days, she has also been scratching her ears more than any other cat I have had and I have seen tiny black balls of im not sure what in her ears.  What could this be?? Do I need to take her to the vet?

Great story spirit!  Gotta love cats and their independence!!!!  They make ear mite cotton swabs and you can get them at the petstore if you want to give it a try, TK!

Butters does this on occassion as well-to the point he has scabs in front of his ears where that littl baldy patch is-at first i thought it was from rough housing w/Bob but it's only there and i've seen him scratching @ his ears. i don't see anything that looks like mites so tried to clean them for him-he super appreciated THAT, let me tell you!! the cotton ball was filthy, though, so i wonder if he just needs his ears cleaned. he's a really squirmer and i think we're going to have to roll him up like a burrito in a towel in order to do this. he did seem better after i got done what i could before he lost his temper with me and left, giving me the equivalent of the finger which is a rude shaking of his back leg and a dirty look. of course, i told him how fabulous and handsome he was and gave him a treat right after and he beamed at this show of intelligence and all was forgiven.

I agree with jade.  She needs a vet to clean her ears and help you know how to help the next time.
