My 7 year old orange tabby's ears were very warm to the touch this morning. Is this something that I need to take him to his Vet over?

I wouldn't worry if it seemed like a temporary thing. A cat's temperature will vary about four degrees over a two hour period, as high as 102.5. Cat's also seem to be great conductors of heat, and commonly a great deal of that heat will be felt in the ears/head as it dissipates.

I've often thought we should place many sleeping cats in the sun and harness them as a natural source of energy. :)

If your cat seems overly hot and begins acting in a listless fashion, however, then I'd consider taking kitty to the vet.
