Gooy mat on short-haired cat

I think my cat got some jam on his fur yesterday and it caused a mat.  Since it is a small mat, I tried to comb it out with a little bit of water but it wasn't helping.  He's a very cooperative cat, but I didn't want to push him further and cause pain.

Should I just cut the fur or is there something else I can do? Would a little bit of cat shampoo help?

Okay thanks. That's what I'll do. You got the shedding part right. Waldo seems to shed more than others I've seen.

Don't you just HATE that? :)

I usually just cut it out. considering how much they shed, I figure they won't miss it. The patch will regrow in again and look normal in a few weeks.
