That was my point when I shared about giving my parakeet injections. We love our pets like they're our children and we will do things we never dreamed we could do. I was only PK's age when I had to give those injections for the first time and didn't have 25 more years of life and pet experience under my belt, but we did it because there was no other choice, my bird would have died otherwise, so that's why I say that NOTHING is too much when it comes to the pets we love and when it comes right down to it, we are stronger than we think :)
It is amazing the things we do for the ones we love. Just the description of all of this upsets my belly but then i pass out over bandaids!!! If that was my boy i would be doing it too. You are doing great PK. Just take some deep breaths......try not to overstress yourself. Abby has to be glad to be home and having you taking care of him......Keep us posted. You and Abby are in our prayers......sara snickers and the beagle
the first time will be the worst!! get yourself some latex gloves if you don't want to touch..it may still be tender to him and he's been handled so much thats why the growl...yes you do sure have to make sure it stays very clean...its only a little seepage from the food over flowing a bit...nothing icky.
get some latex gloves and use soap and water...did they tell you betadine too?..just some mild disenfectant...but if you are doing the ointment that will be an antibiotic..so just make sure your hands/gloves are clean always when handling..go easy..he will trust you soon and you will be alot less worried, remember cleaning the naval of your newborn??? no different honey...you'll be ok..get some sleep all will be less overwhelming to you in the morning...certainly take some ibuprofen...just less than usual with the benadryl...goodnight
*sigh* I was not ready for this. But then again, who is? ugh..it must have been freaky to see that incision. And having to put ointment? Doesn't it make you think you'll hurt them somehow?
Gosh I don't even want to touch that tube. Every time you lift the t-shirt he growls. I think it bothers him, maybe even hurts him, but if you don't clean it then it will become infected. I'm now talking about the part that's close to the skin. That part..well you can see some discharge from the stomach. Gross, I know...but I have to clean it, and just deal with it. I hope he recovers soon. I can't stand to see him like this. He looks nothing like the big fluffy cat you see on my page. It's shocking and sad...
I just took some Benadryl. I am exhausted but can't sleep.............stress?
I wonder if it'd be ok to take some Ibuprofen for my neck. Gosh I can't even turn my head to the right....
Ohhh my I can't blame you for being overwhelmed...thats alot to take in and all at once, and natural to be so afraid of doing something wrong..but see already you are getting the hang of it!!....the little burrito in a blanket will heal up so quickly now that he is home...and will feel alot more like eating once that bacteria is killed....you are getting tons of good advice and the vets are only a call away..so great that they are 24/7!!
Jade is right abt cleaning the adaptor...the tubing leading into the tummy can also get clogged (usually only after long term use) if so phone your vet....we used a drip method on an IV pole and the coke was used to clean the line from the pole to the adapter...I know the RN's also somehow would clean a clogged adapter to tummy with coke...but that takes some know how so as not to get it into the tummy..its a delicate matter of injecting and swishing than draining out same way it went in...would not advise you trying this...
tubes can also come loose or get pulled out and than need to again be inserted surgically...but don't worry abt anymore than you need to for now, you will soon get onto all this and be alot less nervous.....mothers are taught how to home feed their babies same way!....sure wish some of us were closer to give you a hand..
Oh abt the feliway...I use it here to keep Nemo the little pisser from spraying when I have company or when he's upset...yes it does say right on the box to use to calm kitties who are recently home from the hospital...to keep them calm and have a feeling of well being..its the same phenomes(SP?)...that they produce when they rub their lips/whiskers on us...shows they feel happy and relaxed..and this gives off the same scent to them.
PK...you'll see how much better Abby looks even by tomorrow..all the antibiotics and steroids and just being home will do wonders..you get some sleep before you are at the vets yourself!!
Jade...NO I couldn't imagine the injection on a tiny bird and I've done most everything to people or pets but that over the years....but we do learn to do what we need to do somehow don't we.....
I don't think he'll get hurt. The tube stays in place...you're just pulling off the top which is the adapter. I doubt he'll perk up too much since you said your giving him some kind of tranquilizer and I assume a pain med too. Once that stops and has a day or two's worth of food in him, you'll see a huge improvement, I'm sure of it...
