My 12 week old kitten doesn't want to play

Hi, I adopted a pure bred Russian Blue kitten two weeks ago. His first couple days, he was playful and fun. Then he got sick with a mystery virus and had a high fever for a few days. Since then, his temperature has returned to normal, but he still seems to be sleeping all the time, and has no energy for playing. Any insight into this? Should I have him checked out by the vet again?

Thanks!

oh No....thats what I was afraid you'd tell me...there is a long acting injection antibiotic called convienia...animals are getting ill and even dying from this yet Vets refuse to that adverse reactions arent rare...
I do pray your kitty is able to clear this frm his system asap....
I will give you a link to a LONG write up from other members whose kitties have suffered b/c of this horrible drug.
the article mentions getting some Benebac a probiotic or Forti Flora. these are both avail thru your Vet clinic, this may help

If you talk to the Vet they will try and minimize the reaction or tell you this is all unfounded it is NOT !!

the second link is by a Vet that also warns of it, copy and take to your Vets office if needed, they need to be much more aware of the dangers...

I am sending my love and my prayers for your little kitten...I do hope this will pass quickly...make sure she is eating and drinking LOTS...♥

When we went to the vet, she said sometimes kittens just get a virus that passes in a few days and that they can't always identify the cause. Mysterious was my term for it.

She took blood from him, came back negative for FIV and FLV as well as any other viruses that they could have identified.

At the time he had a very high fever, 105.5, so she gave him fluids under the skin, as well as a long acting shot of antibiotics.

Currently he is eating only wet food with a little water mixed in to help with his hydration levels. He did have a bowl of dry food out for when we were gone, but he hasn't shown a lot of interest. I have taken that away for the weekend, to see if wet only will help.

I don't know what else would cause this kind of sleepiness. I just want a healthy happy kitty. :(

sorry that didn't make alot of sense.....should read my own posts before submitting...what I meant to say was it was pretty lame of the Vet to say the lethargy was likely caused by the constipation...

constipation of course would make a kitten or anyone feel sluggish, but not to the extreme lethargy you are worried about....

sorry for kitties troubles, can I asked why the Vet said the fever was caused  by a 'mysterious virus' ? were tests done to see if this kitten has FIV positive?

Did the Vet give any injections or medications for the inflammation?

that is a pretty lame of the Vet to say they constipation could be caused by constipation IMO

to help with the stool....PLEASE feed canned wet food, I would NOT add pumpkin to it just now, pumpkin does help b/c it is a fiber but if the stools are hard and pebble like than too much fiber can make it worse.
you can TEMPORARILY add a small pinch of miralax(well disolved) to the wet food...but this can only be used as a temporary solution and not permanently.
If he is now on dry food, by switching to wet will help alot on its own. also make sure he is drinking lots of water

Hi all, thanks for your responses.

I spoke to my vet on the phone yesterday afternoon. The blood work she did last week didn't reveal anything other than signs of inflammation, which she attributes to whatever mystery virus he has, so she was hesitant to bring him in just to repeat the same process, especially since he has no fever.

I also noticed his stool is very hard and pebble like, and on top of that, had to help pull one out of him that he didn't finish yesterday (motherly love). The vet said his lethargy could be caused by constipation and a tender stomach. I am going to give him food with canned pumpkin and a tiny pinch of miralax this weekend and see if that helps.

Otherwise we'll be back to the vet on Monday.

Anyone have experience with a constipated kitten? Tips to help him feel better?

Have to agree with our posters. When a kitty, especially a kitten isn't interested in play, that is one of the sure signs your kit is ill.

As soon as Meezy stops her mouse play, we are off to the vets. Never fails she is always in need of some meds for something.

Let us know how it goes at the vet.

Definitely bring him back to the vet.  He may need some more meds.

How is his appetite?

I would.  He might need more diagnostics, he sounds like he is still sick.
