My cat has a dime size hole in his skin! Like, the skin is missing!

My cat had a small chunk of his fur in a mat yesterday, he has never got mats before, he is a very well groomed cat with regular washings. So I was concerned, but it didn't seem to bother him, so I just let it be. But today, my 5 year old daughter was screaming cuz she said she saw a hole in shadows skin! So I checked, and sure enough, there is a dime size hole of skin missing where the mat was! Like you can see the muscle underneath. I was tying to clean it with just a warm rag, and when I'd wipe, the skin moved, and you can see inside my cat! It is very disturbing. I have absolutely no money for a vet and can not afford a bill. He doesn't seem like he is in any pain, but it is very tender to the touch and is red and has an oder. And he keeps licking it. What should I do? I wish I could put a pictures on here... If you think you may be able to help, I can email you a couple pics..?

i have a cat his name is Max and he came today at home because i left him go outside but i saw his and i kiss him then i saw his arm and their was a big hole in his arm i started to cry and i check it out then i saw his inside his body and look like it was breath his belly. I came to my room adn seach it up and they said take them to the vet but it covid i cant really and you have the same promblem  and i dont really know what to do right now

You can take a cat to the vet even in these times. You might need to go to an emergency vet. Phone one and find out what their procedures are.

Please don't hesitate, find a vet open at night if that is what time it is where you are, and take your cat there. They have procedures in place to keep the people safe from Covid, and your cat needs to see the doctor.

hi again, I read in a good holistic site some recommendations that OTHERS have used(I haven't myself)......these are cheap and available and some report good results on infections or open wounds
1. hydrogen peroxide...dab some on the wound 3-4x a day...avail. at any pharmacy for under $10 a bottle
2. Stevia.....its a herb/sugar substitute and supposed to heal up wounds nicely..get it in a liquid form and use 3-4x daily. this is avail anywhere herbs/vitamins are sold, and it shouldnt be very costly either....

there is also colloidial silver avail at a vitamin/herb store...this one I have used and its excellent for open areas and infections on pets and humans alike. you can also mix it into a paste with turmeric powder for added benefit....this costs about $20 a bottle.

given that you are really short of $ I would try the peroxide first...this is safe, available and not expensive.

you posted on an old post from July, so not too likely you'll get a response, I don't know if the original poster is still on the site or not?
hon, I don't know what to say when money is scarce its such a problem to try and help our pets.................it sounds very much like your kitty has an possible underlying infection..was an antibiotic prescribed at the time?.
could your family make a call to a Vet and ask for help with paying for a visit or perhaps they would prescribe an antib without seeing the wound(these are very inexpensive)...
if you go to the first post on our forum there is also some ideas for help with paying for Vet care.
I will try and find some natural remedies in the meantime, but these are usually only helpful for new/or superficial skin wounds.
tell me how old is kitty, are there any other symptoms such as increased thirst by any chance?

The same thing occurred with my family's cat. We took him to the vet, and a woman there told us that it was a bite [which I'm about 99% sure was incorrect]. She stapled it up, but about a month or two later when it should have finished healing, it opened up again and has been closing and opening up on a regular basis since then. I was wondering if you ever figured out exactly what it was...? If you have, and know some home remedies, it would be a great help! Our family doesn't have much money, and taking him to the vet is not an option any longer.

If you can or are willing to drive a bit out into the country, their vets are really cheap. We spend less than 1/2 the amount there than we do when we go to the city vets. It's worth the extra gas money and they have always done a good job.

I read your other post and I'm glad you have decided to take kitty to a Vet, it sounds like kitty may have an infection in the wound if there is an odor.
I can't tell you what could have caused this other than perhaps the mat was bothering him and he bit it off the pulling can cause skin trauma, but on the other hand there could have been something going on underneath originality that lead to the mat.
so its much better to get a good examination and possibly some antibiotics.
