Shoking Lab results from Pet Food Testing

Dr. Carole Osborne recently blogged an article on Human Food for Your Pets.
I just found this soon to be released article on what a Lab found in commercial Pet Foods......supports the feeding of homemade diets "most nutritious pet food is when you make up meals yourself with quality ingredients and natural supplements" as quoted on a link in same article. I encourage everyone to read.

ZQ.....you are doing good with Skunkie, he is living a long and fairly healthy life. HOw were we to know that what we think is a balanced and nutritious food is all a lie.....

Nemo is NOT on a raw diet, I tried that too and he refused, this is one finicky little guy.....you have NO idea how changing his diet became such a CATastrophe around here took months and many trials!

He is on a COOKED homemade diet. pretty much the same recipe but cooked. when doing the cooked version we do need to add more supplements so it does make it a little trickier....and not just any supplements either, some are harmful to cats b/c of ingredients that tag along as fillers...so it has to be certain brands.
I can give you all those details if you are interested, or perhaps I will type it all out on the health pages like PK did with the raw diet(?)

Nemo also has a horrid time with constipation, for that I give 2cc's of Lactulose 1-2x day. along with 4cc's water....it softens the stool and than they can pass it easier.
My Vet recommended miralax but after research found that this wasn't so good for our critters......(always have to read the fine print) so we went with the lactulose instead. It works....sometimes I have to add 10cc's powdered Vit C along with.

anytime you want more info I'd be happy to help out.....♥

ZQ...sending prayers for little Skunkie.  I'm really sorry to hear her appetite is poor since I know you give her a special med to keep it up.  And the constipation issue - poor baby.  I know that's not an easy thing to deal with.  You're such a loving and dedicated mama, ZQ.  Skunkie is very lucky to have you!

You are both in my prayers!...♥

I still haven't looked at that link yet!  But, arsenic is rather scary to be adding to our cat food!  No freaking wonder so many cats are getting kidney disease and cancer.  WTF is wrong w/ these companies????  Bottom line is the most important thing to these companies!  The ONLY regulation is by AAFCO, and that deals w/ proper vitamins and nutrients added to the food....that's it!  Sooooo, this means that you can add the "correct" nutrient mixture to poisonous crap and call it "nutritious" and sell it.  That's what it boils down to here.  Really disgusting and makes me feel guilty as hell for feeding Skunkie this junk for 17 yrs.  Poor Skunk!

Sara and Opus-Thank God, she's hanging in there.  Her appetite is not where I want it right now and I'm working on it.  I am also still dealing w/ constipation w/ her.  Not as bad as Hissie, thankfully.  But, I will have to keep my eye on her.  It's a shame Skunkie doesn't take after her mama in the "poop" department.  LOL  But, all in all she's hanging in there.

Opus-Really, really awesome that Nemo's doing so well on the raw food diet.  I think it's a trip that you had your vet red-faced.......LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT.  The vets just don't get enough education on the nutritional side of things w/ pets.  Of course, they're not always gonna be right!

How long has Nemo been on the diet?  AND, how are you getting the vits and mins. right.  That's what scares me so much about switching over to raw food.  =(  Wish it was easier!

Hugs
ZQ

Oh I agree about ripping testicles off ........makes me rage and sick/disgusted all rolled into one!!
Its all profit driven, never any concern for health and well being...and for the most part they get away with it, much more regulation needed!!

ZQ, Nemo is doing very very well, his PH has dropped considerably, there are NO signs of crystals.....my Vet was kinda red faced there because he warned me the ONLY way to disolve these crystals were to feed a prescription u/s diet.....I would have except, Nemo wouldn't so I was desperate to find something OTHER than dry food that he would eat and thus led me to the homemade. I'm happy, he's happy......now were working on Sami..thx for asking..
Hows pretty Skunkie?

ZQ...it's okay.  It's not upsetting like what you're thinking.  Dr Osborne's post is a wonderful read and the link Opus left is all about the toxicity of elements in pet food...such as arsenic.  Really scary, especially when I think of what you and I feed our cats.  Fancy Feast is sure not the best choice.  I saw the Tikki brand mentioned yesterday and I think I'll try that next on Jade...I won't hold my breath, though.
