Dancer was our little house guardian, nicknamed Gremlin.

She never got bigger than 6 or so pounds, only normal size kitty we've had (according to some books).  She was fearless, but gave her trust very sparingly, very few people could handle her once she reached adulthood: my wife, me, our friend Lewis, Doc Langley (the vet in Nebraska), and Laurie Ann (the kenneler we used in NE), being the very few.  Other folks, she'd just sit and give them a look, then calmly turn and walk away.

I'll see if I can find the picture I took when Queen Victoria slapt next to her for the first time in Florida a week or so after we rescued her.

Hahahaha, Pip, I know you are a "Friskies" lover.  And I must say, all my childhood cats lived good long lives and also ate the Friskies with dry food in morning and throughout the day, then Friskies wet food at night.  And so far, Jade seems to be good on that crappy Fancy Feast, lol...

I know it was a long time ago, but so sorry for the sudden loss of April Dancer.  She sure was a cute little girl.

Cat Food Heretic Alert! =)

I have always fed my kitties either Purina or Friskies dry food with a twice a day meal of their wet food.

Current 4 seem to like Friskies flavors better than others, so that is the brand we get: Indoor Formula dry in self-feeders and regular Friskies wet for breakfast and dinner, 1/4 can each at these times.

In the regular rotation (14 flavors of wet in the kitty cupboard) are: Tuna, Tuna & Egg and Tuna & Chicken.

On this sort of feeding, the only cat Anita and I have ever had that lived less than 16 years was April Dancer, who died of anaphylactic shock during a routine procedure at the vet's.

Similar feeding and life spans for our childhood cats after the late 60's, when the era of modern pet nutrition seemed to take off and even the mega-brands got better.

Check out my cat picture album for lifespans...

I've found that the key to kitty survival is good food, a safe habitat, preventative medicine and caring overseership, along with affection, play and a bit of structure to life's routine.

Otherwise, just like people, kitties will live as their genetic potential allows.

Margy, it's better to feed Tweety all wet food, but if you want to leave her the cookies (oops, my word for dry food) to graze on then give the Wellness a try (the *Friskies* isn't good food).  You can get that at Petco.  We switched Jade from Purina One, to that with no trouble.  And since Jade has had some trouble with crystals, I switched her to TWO cans of Fancy Feast a day instead of the dry food in morning and wet at night.  I just give some Wellness dry if she's still hungry later at night.  You can substitute the milk for a little bit of...shoot, I can't remember the name of it, but comes in a box, like a juice box, but is made 'specially for cats.  Just googled and it's called "Catsip" - they sell it at the market.

I commend you for wanting to give Tweety the best life you can : )

thank you guys and especially furballsmom   I have given her cat food with tuna in but not much as she doesn't seem to like it ..so leaving down the dry food is okay she really likes it, I have noticed she doesn't drink a lot,and I try to get the food with juices . You know in England they give their cats milk to drink like we put down water, my DD always has milk down,I have told her its not a good idea at least not all the time ..

Hi, I'm not Opus, but I do have a few things that might help.  You are doing well in giving Tweety wet food.  This is very good because cats naturally don't drink a lot of water.  The animal we know as the house cat today is a species that originated from desert areas and would get most of the moisture it needed from the foods it hunted.  Likely, the foods it hunted, as I've watched a documentary about a type of wild cat that looked very much like an orange tabby cat, were snakes, lizards, gerboa and other types of small animals.  This would naturally be why cats today will still hunt these types of animals, including rats, mice and shrews.  Undoubtedly, this is why Akira enjoys chasing after and killing the giant house spiders that come into my apartment from time to time.  I am glad she kills the giant ones that come in here, because I really don't like spiders.  They're not a dangerous species, so it is fine if she chases and kills those big ones, otherwise I would discourage her from chasing them.

Wellness is a really good brand of cat food.  Most of their formulas are grain free.  A lot of cats, like mine, are allergic to grains.  I know from experience that Friskies does include some kind of grain in all of their cat food, including the wet food.  Even the wet food that doesn't have "gravy" has flour in it.  I've had to read labels in order to find food that my kitty can eat, and I used to feed her Friskies.  When she had obvious reactions to her food, I discovered why she craved the Friskies with gravy all the more so than the other kind.  The gravy is made similarly to the gravy we might make for ourselves.  Akira's vet was impressed that I figured out that it might be gluten the cat was allergic to, since I have food allergies myself.  At least I was pretty close in figuring out that it was all grains.  Cats don't need the grains in their diet anyway, because they are obligate carnivores.  By being "obligate carnivores" this means that biologically they have no choice in the matter about eating meat.  They would suffer serious health issues if they did not eat a meat diet.  There is one type of fish that I did learn that cats should not eat, though, even if the fish is sold as a cat food.  Cats should not eat tuna, because there is something in tuna that can harm a cat's kidneys.  I don't remember what it is that is in the tuna itself, but tuna can harm your cat.  Some cat food companies, even the natural cat food companies, sell tuna cat food.  Don't buy tuna for the cat.  They are alright with salmon, but not tuna.  They are even okay with the other types of fish that we call white fish, but never tuna.  There are other brands of grain free cat foods available, so it won't hurt to try other brands.  I just know from experience that it helps a lot to feed the cat as close to a natural diet as possible.
