Why is my cat losing fur? :(

My cat is about 7-8 years old. She's been pretty healthy, I've never had issues with her, which is why she's never seen a vet. She recently developed a small baldish spot near her tail and it slowly and then more rapidly spread quite a bit around her tail and its now going up it. I don't think she has fleas (she's an indoor cat and I checked her too) but she has a couple red or orange dots on her skin. Her skin doesn't really look irritated. Under her tail near her butt there was a cut as if she was biting and it's healing. The missing fur is either like a buzz cut or jut gone (I don't remember lol). I don't know what's wrong with my baby girl :( if I take her to the vet they'll make me get her shots and I really can't afford it at the moment :/ I'd like to figure out if there's anything i can do at home before I spend the money. I'm 17 and I didn't want to take her to the vet until the fall so I had time to save more money. If anyone can help if really appreciate it. I have pictures but I'm not sure if I can upload them on this. Ill try. Thanks!

There a few reasons why your cat has this problem on the tail.
Could be to do with chemicals in your home like xxtiffiexx says,
a change of food, mite problem, dermatitis, excessive licking.

See if you can find DermOpt which is available without a prescription.  There have a range of skin and coat care products for cats.  You can check them out on the web.

Best wishes.

im sorry to hear of your kitty's troubles....I will send you a site to do more reading on this..
you said you cannot afford any testing or a Vet visit, than I would strongly suggest you try to eliminate all chemicals in your home, especially room sprays or anything perfumed...that can sometimes be a factor.

If you are feeding dry food can you try to buy cans....sometimes the preservatives in the dry food causes food intolerance's, so does corn and other grains...grain free can food is a little more expensive, do you have a pet store nearby you can shop at and not a grocery store? they usually carry the better grain free diets...it would be helpful if you could afford to try these.

good luck, I know you love your kitty and you are trying.
