behavior

my cat runs frantically through the house dropping poop.  She urinates in the litter box but seems scared to poop in the litter box.   I can usually tell when she's going to do this because she puts her tail between her legs and acts real scared and then begins running laps through the house and they just drop out.  She licks her back paws a lot and chews on the nails.  Her paws looks normal and so do her nails.  No ingrown toe nail or anything out of the ordinary.  She was at the vet 2 months ago for a UTI.  It wasn't a bad UTI, just a mild onset so they gave her Convenia which is the anitbiotic they give as a shot that works over a 2 week period.  I'm very confused at her behavior and am considering taking her back to the vet tomorrow.  Any suggestions?

Is this a new behavior that she is afraid to poo in the box?....if she urinates there but not poo than IMO she is having pain when trying to go and associates this pain with the litter box.
Have the Vet check her anal glands. also try to bring a stool sample in with you for examination, could be a parasite problem or IBS?
Please let us know the outcome. and good luck.

Thank you so much.....yes both my kitties have frequent UTIs.  Each time they've had them, there hasn't been any crystals in their urine.  This time may be different for Pooh.  She's not straining to P, but is not going as frequent as usual.  I'm taking her first thing in the morning and hopefully they will get her feeling better.  Are you familiar with Convenia?  Its the antibiotic they give them and it stays in their system for 2 weeks.  It's very convenient and no stress to the kitty, so I don't have to give it twice a day with Clavamox.  I haven't done any research on it and was curious how you would compare the 2.  Thanks for all your help!  You sound like a great kitty parent.

oh thats too bad, we were all so hopeful that kitties problems were a thing of the past......something is causing her PAIN in the butt region and she is trying to get at the irritation by her constant licking and chewing...the pain can be from irritable bowel disease or since you mentioned she had a UTI previously that could be whats wrong. Did the Vet recheck her urine?
A girlfriend of mine has been going thru something very similar with her cat, not dropping the poop but running wildly and licking furiously at her back side, after months of one Vet insisting it was anal glands she finally tried a new one and he right away did a urine sample and found kitty has crystals in her urine FLUTD (feline lower urinary tract disease, formerly called FUS or feline urology syndrome)..
this is very common, more so amongst males, but females can also have it. It is also very PAINFUL....if you've ever had a urinary tract infection you'll know what I mean.
Its not only painful, if there are crystals present they can collect in the urethra and block if up, causing the bladder to rupture....
Have you notice is kitty straining to have a pee? If so this would be a medical emergency.

sorry to hear you're having the same issues my kitty Pooh was having.  We thought all was taken care of in August but it's happening again.  Took her to the vet today for her vaccinations and had the doc check her anal glands and all was normal.  Now she appears to be very uncomfortable.  She continues licking and chewing on her rear legs and feet.  She is also grooming her back end quite frequently.  She is so tired and hasn't had any rest since the appt this morning.  Any ideas t his time around?

My Persian has suddenly started running frantically through the house and dropping poop.  He will urinate in the litter box and will poop in litter box if we have him contained in bathroom with litter box.  Took him to vet who did check anal glands (all was well), checked stool sample (normal) and urine tests (clear, no problems).  We have not moved anything or changed anything, so cannot figure what is going on with him.  He also licks his hind quarters just before/after/during the frantic run.  Any ideas?????

Oh thats really great news.....something thats easily fixed. I hope soon kitty will be back herself again..and pooing in the right spot.
Usually when kitties do something out of the ordinary like that its because they are trying to communicate something to us and most often its 'I hurt, help me'.
so glad you got her in and helped.

Took Pooh to the vet today and her left anal gland was infected.  They have her on Clavamox.  I'm all to familiar with this antibiotic.  They were going to give her the new one Convenia but I'm not sure I think it works as well as Clavamox.  Her fecal was negative so I'm happy about that.  Thanks for your help!

your welcome, I hope this is all thats wrong and therefore easily solved.
this condition isn't rare for cats....cats need to have a semi hard stool inorder to properly expressed their anal glands when having a poop...it the stool is too soft the glands become impacted over time.
She is very likely having some discomfort there in the anal area and it would be a great place to start from...it is painful to express, but worth it if it leads to her feeling better.
best of luck and keep us updated

Thank you.  I never thought of that but several years back her sister had similar issue and needed to have her anal glands expressed.  I was told it is very rare with cats and common for dogs to have this, but hear it's very painful.  All the symptoms are the same.  I'm going to take her in first thing and if it's not her anal glands I'll have her keep her so hopefully they can get a stool sample.  I thought of saving it yesterday afternoon but never did.  Doubtful she'll go again this morning.  Thanks for the info and I'll let you know what I find out.  BIG Thanks!!!
