I argue with my vet all the time.  Maybe argue isn't the right word, but I discuss and question his treatment recommendations.  I'm not a vet, but I know my cats better than he does.  I also "argue" with my own doctor at times.  2 weeks of anitbiotics isn't that long, but if after 4 weeks, it hasn't improved, then I think it is clearly time to "argue" for a different treatment.

Opus....thanks for the clarification, that does make sense.  I do give Squeaky about 250mg as a maintenance dose.

The nasal blockage could also be a benign polyp, fairly common in FHV1 cats.  The gentamicin is just an anti-irritant drop, can't hurt but I've never found it particularly useful either.  I would discuss the financial situation with your vet's office.  Often they are willing to set up a payment plan.  Vets typically make a lot of money off of the the prescriptions, supplements, and other medications they provide.  You can save considerably by ordering the meds yourself from someplace like Foster and Smith or PetMeds.

I brought lacey to the vet and she put her on gentamicin eye drops, she also took a biopsy of the inside of her nose she found a lump inside the front of her nose. I get the biopsy result in 7 days, say a prayer that it is not cancer. I love her and I just lost a cat
bootsie nov.12 and he was laceys best friend. Boots was 13 years old. The vet said that
she probably does have feline herpes but it is a waste of money to do the testing right now .I do not know where I am going to get money for all this. My care credit it at it's limit.
Do you know of any place I could get help to get every thing that she needs to get done.
I don't know what to do? Thank you for all your help.

Hello.  I've read your thread and I could be way off base here, but my cat had Cryptocococcus which is a fungal infection obtained from inhaling bird droppings (or something like that).  The fungus was in her head between her eyes.  The vet did a fine needle biopsy on it since it was clearly a foreign lump.  I'm thinking your vet could test the nasal discharge!  Normally, if a cats immune system is healthy, they will fight off such an infection, however, if kitty has herpes, which my cat does and sounds like yours does too, then the immune system is compromised and the infection is more prone to take hold.  It's rare from my understanding, but it happened, my cat is proof!

You've been through so much with your kitty, I thought it couldn't hurt to bring this up to your current vet.

Good Luck!

Hi, I know you aren't vets? I have changed vets 5 times I am on my last one and the
vet tells me that she had a bacteria because when she cleaned her nose it was a green
color, I have to take her back and if this doesn't work then I will have to take her for a
rhinoscopy which means a specalist and and putting her tosleep so they can do it. I
am very leary of that because she isn't a big cat. Thanks

well hon we aren't Vets here, we do have to follow what they recommend, however I sure would ask questions as to the need for such a long period on antibiotics, and Is there a bacterial infection????, has the Vet changed the prescription and given you several different kinds over this time or has it always been the same one? question that too.

It depends on kitties immune system to determine how quickly she'll be able to fight this off....the l-lysine will help. and YES you sure can give probiotics.

It maynot hurt to see another Vet, is that possible for you?

HI , I just wrote to nancy a I was supposed to bring lacey to the vet today they canceled
because the vet was sick, I think it was because of the snow? We had 16 inches.
She has been on the antibotics for 2 weeks and they want to keep her on 4 more weeks
I know that they build up a immunity the antibotics, She on benedryl 1/2 a tablet once
a day and lysine 500 to 1000 mg in morning and night 500,  twice a day. how long do it take for the runny nose a eyes to clear up?

Hi nancy I have lacey on 500 to 1000mg of lysine the antibotic the vet said that she should be on it for 4more weeks I am giving her benedryl  a half a tablet 1 a day. and the lysine what am I supposed to argue with the vet. She had green in her nose when the
vet cleaned it out two weeks ago. I am not a vet and I have been to 6 different vets to find out what was wrong with her? She said that If it does not clear up she will have to go for a
rhinoscopy. I Know It seems like a long time, does the runny nose and eyes running ever go away.

Nancy, the only indication of that is from a book I follow. "Whole health for Happy Cats" by Sandy Arora. but than again she is very Holistic minded and tends to be very conservative.

Her words are 500mg for up to a week THAN USE 250mg daily for maintenance.
so she doesn't say not to use for more than a week....just to not use so high a dose.

but everyone this is just her opinion I am relating for reference.....always go by your Vets recommendations!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My 10 month old kitten that has HV1 has had symptoms most of the time for the last 7 months.  He has eye and nose drainage most of the time.  Some days it is less, some days more.  And he has been on L-lysine continuously.  Opus, I am not aware of any info that indicates it should only be for a week.  Do you recall where you found that info?  The info I have actually indicates that it may take up to 3 months of daily use before it has an noticeable benefit.  My vet recommends it as an ongoing nutritional supplement both for kittens under a year and older cats over 8.

6 weeks is way too long to continuously be on anti-biotics however.  Anti-biotics destroy all bacteria, including beneficial ones that regulate digestion, and other immune system functions.  They also eventually result in developing immunities against them so they are no longer effective.  Unless she has an active secondary bacterial infection (which herpes is not), I would stop the anti-biotics and give her probiotics instead to replace all of the beneficial bacteria that have been killed off.

hi, stinging nettles is a herb, this works like benadryl does for us for 'cold' symptoms such as runny eye, nose and congestion..I have never had to use it but I have read about excellent results and safer than antihistamines even for cats. I buy my supplements from iherb.com
here is the listing for the one brand of Natures Way. there are a few others that are approved if you can't find this one locally in your Vitamin store(I can give you the names if needed). its important to stick to the approved brands b/c they contain No artificial colorings flavorings etc.

http://www.iherb.com/Nature-s-Way-Nettle-Leaf-435-mg-100-Capsules/2030?at=0

you can use up to 1 capsule a day opened and mixed with food or given by syringe, I would start as always with only half recommended dose just to be sure there are no surprises (diarrhea?)..shouldn't be..

from what I read you should only be using 500mg of L-lysine per day and for no longer than a week. did your Vet tell you different?
after a week I read to cut back to 250mg, but do as your Vet suggests always..this is just my opinion from my reading...

I'm not sure how long a flare up can last? it mainly depends on the overall health and immune system. do you have her on a good NO grain and NO meat by-product diet?

She is on 1000mg of lysine and azromycin 100mg once a day and ointment for her eyes.
What is sting nettles ? where do you get and how much do you give to her, It just seems that the flareup is not going anyway/ how long does a flareup last its been 6 weeks already.

hi dear, may I comment that during a flare up your kitty would really benefit from an amino acid called L-lysine 500mg for a week. this can be obtained at any health food/vitamin store.
Perhaps your Vet has already mentioned this to you?

also for the first signs of a cold or flare up stinging nettles can be very effective....add one capsule per meal to the food....

good luck to kitty♥

Any cat can have a corneal ulcer of the eye or tear duct.  However, that her eyes are not running is good and not a symptom of ulceration.  The eye itself should be moist, but not tearing or draining.
