I am moving back 2 my old city where my vet is so my other 4 will be getting there up dated shots!
Upper respiratory infections in cats are normally due to a feline herpes virus which is NOT transmitable to dogs!! This is very common in shelter settings. Think of it as similar to cold sores seen in humans but sneezing is the symptoms. It is highly contagious so don't allow any unvaccinated cats into your house and wash your hands before you leave the house.
If your other cat is up to date and you fully vaccinate him/her, this is too much of a risk for transmission. Other cats are vaccinated for this virus in the general shots (call your vet if you are unsure what you vaccine for) and most cats have already been exposed to this virus and thus tend not to get very sick.
Still is a good idea to contain your kitten until the sneezing has stopped. Make sure the kitten is eating and drinking well (sometimes when their nose is plugged they can't smell the food and stop eating). Lysine supplements will also help.
Hope your kitten feels better soon!!
PS I use to work at a shelter so I've been through this with numerous different cats and customers that come through the pet store I work at now. Plus, I have my younger cat because he we had an outbreak at the pet store.
IMO you really need another Vet!!!
thx ...but my vet said it was only feline 2 feline,so really just wanted 2 no if others have had this uri with there cats and how there cats did and if it is true with out a doubt that this is feline 2 feline
Dogs CAN get sick from other animals..especially the ones that live with you. If your Kitten has an upper Res. Infection, then it;s quite possible that your other animals, Dogs included can get the same thing. If any of them show signs of what your Kitten did then it;s time to treat them all.
Thanks,
Mollyrae
