sleepless cat

My cat Annie either has Lymphoma or Pancreatitis. I opted out of a biopsy after the ultrasound since she is 13 1/2. I changed vets and she is now on Prednesone. She had lost quite a bit of weight, but seems to be holding on. I'm sure her intestines are thick and lymph nodes swollen so this must give her alot of discomfort. She's not crying but it's so hard to know how she's doing.
She doesn't go into that deep cat sleep so she must be so tired. She is eating now and no problem going in litter box. I am now giving her 1/4 tab of Pepsid. Very hard for me to give pills to a cat. It's a fight every day. Any suggestions.
I can't face the fact that I may have to put her to sleep. I guess I'll know when unless there's a miracle recovery.

Annie was just about the same today. I know what you are saying. She sometimes just looks at me. Then she throws me a curve by going out and chasing a cat. I do know that her tummy is in turmoil with this prednisone. She has been on it a week now and the vet gave me two more weeks worth, but I think I am prolonging a condition that will never go away and make her miserable. Going to call vet today and try and scale down the dosage.
Anyone out there that knows how to do that if the vet doesn't call back?
She is on 2  5mg pills per day plus 1/4 tab pepcid. Today will be the 8th day on 2 pills.
I read online that stomach ulcers are a side effect. Poor kitty has enough trouble with the lymphoma and/or pancreatitis.
I am beside myself knowing what is ahead. I have had to put down 3 of my pets like this. It hurts so badly.

Hi there. How goes the battle? I wish you luck with your kitty. Mine had the same thing.,including the stinky loose stools. That is one of the symptoms of pancreatitus, the other is the weight lose.I force fed my kitty for as long as i could but eventually he just wouldnt let me even open his mouth and I realized that he had more sense than I did as a human. He was sufferring and was very quiet and also just laid there not always sleeping but staring sometimes and my vet told me that he probably was experiencing-some pain. I knew in my heart that it was the best gift I could give him was to let him go across the Rainbow Bridge. If and when you should decide this too; make sure you let your vet administer the dosage and dont take him to the SPCA of Humane Society to have it done as they dont use the same thing the vets use and its not as good. Whatever you decide for poor kitty, I wish you luck.---Catsandninetails

Prednisone usually increases appetite. I never experienced loose stool with any pet that had to be given it either. Maybe the pepcid?

A new development happened today. Gave her the 2 pills plus pepcid and her stools are quite soft and I believe her backside is sore. So is this a side effect from the prednesone? I hope she doesn't get diaarhea. She wasn't that happy today. And not eating as much. Boy is it stinky. poor kitty.

I am glad you found the Pill Pockets and were able to get her to eat them.

Prednisone will definately decrease the swelling in her intestines. Don't just immediately stop giving it to her because she seems better. Just like humans, it should be tapered off so it doesn't shock the endrocrine system which gets lazy when any artifical steroid is around. It depends on the artifical and stops making it's own, so tapering it down helps the endrocrine system into making its own again and the kitty won't go into a huge flare up if stopped without a decreasing dose. I would give her the prednisone until she is stable and better, then decrease the dosage for 5 days and then see how she is after that. It may take quite sometime for her to have symptoms again and in that case, start another prednisone treatment. If she doesn't get any symptoms, then that is great and you don't have to give it to her unless she does.

Our kitty had a mass on his pancreas and it affected his intestines. Giving him his prednisone kept him around for about 6 months before it got to be intolerable for him; couldn't eat without throwing up, couldn't digest because of pressure/blocking on his upper intestines, gave him small amounts of baby food and some would get through the blockage.

He was happy until the end which was our criteria, kitty happiness level, no more purring and wouldn't move.  He did have a good 6 months tho so I hope you can continue to give her her pills.

See if she will like the pill pocket enough to eat it without having to be wrapped up. Break one into several pieces and just give it to her as a treat. Once she associates it with being a treat, not confined and held in a blanket, you may be able to just give her the pills in the pill pocket by dropping the first down and immediately drop a second and third as she begins eating the first so she gobbles the pill one quickly to get the second, third. Cat phsycology 101

Yes, I did squeeze the one pocket into 2 or 3 pieces because they are expensive and the technique worked better with smaller pieces - no chewing necessary.

Let me know how she does and I hope she is with you for quite sometime.

Used the pill pockets last night. Tried to squeeze them and make smaller. Wrapped her in a towel and put her on counter to get a better angle and it worked. Poor little critter has to take 2 prednesone plus 1/4 tab of Pepcid every day for an additional 2 weeks.
Does anyone out there know if this is just a quick fix and that once stopped she will go back or can this be a cure?
I only know that people take this for a short period.
Am I only prolonging the inevitable? She is much more alert and is eating. I guess the swelling in her intestines must be less. Help???

Well, after having so many scars on my hand, I will try the Pill Pockets. Even though she is sick, she sniffs the food and this morning wouldn't touch it because I smashed a 1/4 tab of Pepsid and she hasn't eaten all day.
I am at my wits end. Someone at church gave me a plunger type of gadget to pop the pills in her, but it looks so big and ugly she will hate me.
She hasn't been eating the chunky food because of her digestive problem, so will let you know how the pill pocket worked.

Yep. The Pill Pocksts do  well.  They taste good to the cats and if you stage it right so they just swallow the one with the pill in it  by letting them know there are more treats coming they usually wolf the first one down as soon as the second treat drops. What you are going for is to not let the cat spend too much time with the one that has the pill in it because if they end up chewing too much they might spit it out when they get to the pill. Then they may never trust a pill pocket treat again. You have to be a bit crafty.

They have changed how I give kitties their medecine which used to be a real takel em down and hold em and then hope they dont spit it out routine.

How incredibly clever! i didn't know about that. We ground them up if possible and use the feeding syringe to administer, but I get the impression it tastes terrible!!! This sounds much better, if they'll eat it.

I am sorry to hear about your sick kitty.

When one of ours was sick last year I found these really cool things called Pill Pockets - salmon flavor. It made giving pills to the cat easy.

Just squish the pill pocket around the pill, save 2 extra bits of it for another treat so she knows she's getting more and swallows the first and second peice quickly (choose where the pill is, in the first or second peice) because she knows the next peice is coming.

Our vet sold them to us first, then I found them cheaper at Petsmart.

Being able to give out kitty the medecine he needed gave him extra time with us. I hope she will be with you for quite sometime.

I always judge it by when kitty loses interest in grooming and eating. grooming especially is a sign of how happy a cat is.

I'm so sorry for kitty's poor health. i do hope she gets better.
