Here is an eye opener for ya.
My daughter in law found a cat that was hanging around her apt building. By the time she found the cat he was very skinny, his coat was rough and dull, he had mucous coming out of his nose and eyes.
I told her that he probably had feline leukemia....those are the clear signs. ( I am sure Dock will back me up on this)
She had a neighbor take him to a local vet (she couldn't because my son had the vehicle with the car seat) here who is excellent, and gives his time to help for free.
The cat didn't have Leukemia...... he had a severe kidney infection due to kidney stones (btw...he was a pet of another person who lived in the building).
Point is....pets are not a cheap entertainment. We have to take care of them just as we would any other member of our family. When they need medical help we are OBLIGATED to get them the care we need. If this was a child of yours would you be asking such a question?
yes dorine kay is right, with animals comes responsibility for them...and the costs. there have been times my c.c is max'd looking after one or the other...but it has to be if you want to keep you're kitty, he cann't be left in pain and it IS painful for him!
you really do need to find the cause and treat.
best of luck
I am going to say something that isn't very nice.... If you love your cat cost isn't important. (Just my opinion). To remove the stones is, most likely, going to be expensive. Most vets will work out a fee payment.
What is also important is to have those stones biopsied to find out why your cat keeps getting them.
I don't know what diet your cat has been on, so I can't comment right now about that.
However, get the stones biops and that will tell you what is causing them.
The biop will measure many things such as minerals, vits, and calc, etc. Insist they are biopsied.
With that information you can better care for you your kitty.
Tahnk you for the info .you asked if he was on wet or dry c/d ,He won't eat wet food ,but drinks alottttt of water when he's awake he goes for water all the time and we leave the tap in the kitchen dripping (which he likes )At the moment they are all on disolving ,i have no choice with 3 can not seperate the food . Also i have 3 cats but hes the only male and the one with struivites crystals .So with having to go so often we thought if the operation perineal urethrostomy would get rid of this problem for him well we'll be very hapy .Its hard each time he has this on him & us as we love these cats .We're retired so they are our babies .Thank you again .
I am very sorry to hear about your kitty's continuing problems! A blocked cat is a true emergency so I am happy to see that you are taking whatever steps you can to help alleviate his issues.
Like opus said, costs can vary greatly depending on your location and everything that is included in the surgery. At the hospital I worked at, we did "PUs" fairly routinely. Our prices included 2-3 days of hospitalization and nursing care, the surgery and anesthetics, pain relief medications, antibiotics, surgical monitoring, IV fluids and, of course, all of the OR supplies. I believe most surgeries came in under $800 (if I remember correctly).
The bigger concern here is that he has continued to get blockages...you might post this question in the expert Ask a Vet section and get some information from our veterinarians there.
Another thought just occurred to me, is he eating the canned variety of c/d or the dry?
poor kitty, that can be very painful for them.
I live in canada so I have no idea abt the costs for you...sounds really high to me though, have you checked around at other clinic's?
these crystals are usually related to diet, he is on a fairly good food now, perhaps it just takes awhile for him to pass all the crystals he has in his kidneys..
good luck to you both
