Anyone Know a Specialist in Houston Area?

My son was recently diagnosed with Type 1 Chiari Malformation a few months ago after he underwent an MRI of the brain following him blacking out.  My son has sufferred with migraines for the past few years.  He now has a mild headache continuously.  After the MRI, we were informed that he had 4 mm and 9 mm herniations of the cerebellar tonsils causing mild to moderate neural crowding.  We have been seeing a neurologist regarding his condition, but he is not a specialist in this field.  So far, we have underwent a sleep study and numerous changes to medications, but the headaches are continuing.

Since our appointments consist of him checking mainly his reflexes and balance, which is the norm for a neurological appointment, we would like to meet with a doctor who specializes in Chiari Malformation in the Houston area?

Any ideas?

I had my surgery in Houston by Dr. Edward Murphy. He has office in Houston and Pasadena. He is very good. He uses St. Josephs hospital. Good luck.

I, too, will be looking for a specialist in the Houston area.  There was one in Beaumont (not sure HOW specialized he was, just that he was the one all the other neurosurgeons' offices said was the most familiar with C.M.), but he died last month.  I'm hoping to be able to get into UTMB sometime SOON, but they are still not taking patients for now.  They've been designing and implementing some sort of program so that each department can decide on their own patients rather than having them forced on them by a centralized location.  They've been doing so since Hurricane Ike, which had severely damaged the hospital, as well.  Anyway, I've not heard anything good or bad about the doctors in Houston, so if y'all will let me know, lol... I'd appreciate it!

Greeneyes~ I don't have insurance, either, and no doctors want to see you/help you when you don't have insurance!!  Even when you offer to pay for the office visit up front.  It really *****.  Right now, I'm trying to get SSI, since I can't work, but that's a hassle like you wouldn't believe.  I'm at the appeals end of it now, as I was denied because "while she may be partially disabled because of Chiari Malformation, she can still do significant work." And "Significant work can be part-time work."  Unbelievable... Just who, exactly, is going to hire me when I tell them that I can only stand for so long, sit for so long, walk around for so long, am in constant agonizing pain in my spine, not to mention my hips, legs, neck, shoulders, etc... and Oh, there's going to be days when I can't come in at all because the pain in my head is so overwhelming it causes me to pass out.  Don't ask me to bend over or pick things up, because you'll be picking me up off the floor.  But, yeah, they say we should be able to work through all that... stupid government doctors.  I can sure see employers LEAPING to be the first to hire me!  LOL.  Hm, do I sound this negative in all of my postings??  I sure hope not!

I too am in the Houston area and have been seeking a good chiari specialist for my surgery!  So far I have seen 2 here.....I can't really remember the first ones name as I wasn't very impressed...lol maybe Dr. John Berry.....I dunno....both he and his office kinda wrote me off and was like "in your case you can have surgery or not....whatever"!! and ever though I asked for them to send my pricing information because I had no insurace I never heard back from them.  The other doctor I have seen is Dr. Ajay Bindal.  I have heard many good and encouraging stories from other people that have either worked along him or have had surgeries done by him although none of the surgeries were for our chiari but other neck related issues.

So....as of right not I have a couple more doctors on my list of get second opinions from just to see what they say and what kind of "vibe" I get from them.  I have to wait til Feb or so because of the pre-existing clause in my insurance and then will go from there.

I hope this helps some and if you need more or anything else feel free to contact me since we're both in Houston...=)
