Are melanomas common years after decompression surgery with durma opening

I was diagnosed with a Chiari Type I in 1989. I had decompression surgery with durma opening in 1990. I was diagnosed with a melanoma in 2014. Does anyone know if these two things are related. I have had repeat MRI with and without contrast for the past 5 years with no significant change in size. I am however having an increase in intensity of headaches and blurry vision. Obviously I have discussed the increase symptoms with my neurosurgeon. Any info would be appreciated.

Hi and welcome to the Chiari forum.

May I ask where your melanoma is located? I was told, to protect the scar and not allow the sun to burn the skin in that area. I always wore a hat, and when I went in a pool in addition to the hat I wore a sleeveless shirt with a stand up collar to help cover my neck. I have not heard of anyone else saying they developed a melanoma post op.

It is possible the increase of symptoms could be scar tissue creating yet another CSF obstruction. OR it could be a related condition you were not aware of before surgery.

Do you know what type of dura patch was used for your duraplasty?

I actually meant to write meningioma not melanoma. Sorry. I did have a melanoma on my left shoulder but that wasn't what my question was suppose to be. I have a meningioma on the top of my brain and wondered if the were common in Chiari patients. Sorry for the confusion. I don't know what was used for the duroplasty, but the build up of scar tissue makes sense. Thank you!
Well that does change what it is...but it still is not something I have heard that others here have been diagnosed with post op.

Did they rule out Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, it can cause issues post op depending on what type of patch was used....however, most develop issues sooner post op if that would be the underlying cause.

If you did not get an OR report, you can still contact the facility that did the surgery and they can give you a copy, it should show what type of patch was used.
