I took viva's advice and made a buckwheat hull pillow. I ordered 5 lbs of the hull from amazon for $25. I love the pillow as you can shape it any way you want to your head. I don't think it will work sitting upright in a hospital bed though - to heavy and will slide down. Viva what did you use in hospital ?
I just discovered the water pillow. I stayed at my brother's place over night and he had one. It was great, and cool. They are sold at the Drug Store, (Shopper's Drug Mart) here in Canada.
Thanks! I looked it up!! I will look into it.
I have the Chiari pillow....it's called the "Zipperhead" pillow because you can remove or add stuffing to it (which they send you in a separate bag). Just type in to any search bar Zipperhead pillow and it should pop up...I bought mine through Medpillow.com. It was approx. $57.00, but well worth it!! I purchased it about a year ago and I am now 5 weeks post op...I don't know what I would do without my pillow!!!
Viv makes a good point, on one of our threads here it does tell u not to lay with ur head bend down...or as I like to say with ur chin close to ur chest as it bends ur neck and can cause issues and pain.
Right now, 2 pillows are working for me. Can the angle of your head be wrong?
I need to do something. It's either too hard or too soft. I might just go back to my travel pillow!
I just got a latex pillow from Bed Bath and Beyond last night. I think it will take a little time to get used to, but I definitely woke up a little less sore than usual. I will let you know how it goes after I have slept on it awhile.
Here is the link to the lumbar memory foam homedics pillow that I love.....

I would turn this on the rounded side down and lay the side of my head on the flat side, and it worked great.....it is not wide, so it did not bother my scar or that area....and it is so soft it was very comforting when I was in pain.
I don't have a Chari pillow but I found a pillow at Penny's that have little beads inside. It's very soft yet forms to your head while sleeping. I also bought a cheap U shaped wrap that while laying on my back helps take the pressure off the back of the head. Hope you find one. It makes all the difference. We are also in the process of buying a new mattress which I know will help you also. Sleep dreams.
Linda :)
Hi, a few members that r no longer active did get the Chiari pillow, it was very $$$$ and they said it was not worth it...u can get a decent pillow for much less, I do have a list with the info in the Health Pages for those interested in the links.
I have a Homedics memory foam lumbar pillow that I used for my head and Loved it...it was and still is the best pillow I ever had or could have had for my chiari, I even used it at the hospital.
My bed pillow is from Target and is a reshapable one, which I have not been able to locate again, but it was only 9.99...so, u can get a pillow that works for less....the lumbar pillow was a gift, so I do not recall the price , but I do have a link for that posted in my profile .....
I used to have a cervical pillow, which was ridiculously expensive.
My acupuncturist recommended a buckwheat hull pillow for headaches, and after looking at the price, I made my own (from Martha Stewart's site). It feels a little too low right now, but it did help for awhile. What I like about it is that it conforms to your head, but it also stays cool, due to the airspace between the hulls.
I too would like to know. My night times are nightmares! I have such a hard time falling asleep from the pain and then once I fall asleep I wake in worse pain! I am finally breaking down and getting a new mattress which I hope helps, but I am looking for a different pillow too. Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thank you all so much!
